Picked up this SVT-40 today

Post by Chiroptile »

Hey, guys. I've been on hunt for one for a while now. Picked this up today, it's a 1943 Tula. I'm not going to get into a whole winded description, hopefully the pictures will suffice in that regard. Pretty decent bore, dark but with strong rifling. I'm not sure what all of the little circle/letter stamps on the right side of the stock mean, so if anybody has an idea, I'd love to hear it. Gas system looks very clean and is set to 1.7. I'm having trouble finding a reproduction gas tool so it looks like I'll have to shell out for the real thing. There is a stock repair on the right side, directly across from the safety tab cut-out. I don't see an A anywhere on the stock, but is it possible that this is AVT furniture? Did they ever "repair" the full-auto tab cutouts when refurbing SVTs? Stock reminds me of my M39

That is odd that the repair is right there, it might be AVT furniture. Does the stock seem beefy? I know the AVT stocks were "beefier" than the SVT's.

Thank you, sonny. I'm going to keep it off the range until I can turn that gas setting down, I think. Can't wait to shoot it.

Robert, I've never handled an SVT before so I can't really compare it to anything. I wouldn't say that the stock is particularly beefy, no. It really is an odd place for a repair. And the shape of the repair, too.. really looks like they tried to fill in a cutout.

QZ.. call me naive, but I have hope that Russia and the US will eventually hug it out and reopen the milsurp channels.

Sure, rub it in. Another rifle I can't own legally here in NY. I can hardly wait to move.

But seriously, beautiful rifle!

Just make sure you give it a real good cleaning if you shoot corrosive surplus ammo.

This video may help you but the guy goes a little overboard in the disassemble part.. lol

Also mine loves the Russian surplus in the 880 round crates but hates the Norinco Chinese stuff..

Sonny, I won't be shooting any corrosive ammo through this.

WWW, I'm a New York ex-pat myself.. From the Bronx. Moved out to the Midwest four years ago and haven't looked back. I love the city, and I absolutely love the beautiful NY state, but City Hall and Albany have done their damage and are driving many New Yorkers for greener pastures

My sentiments exactly. I think we could if we cut off the bayonet lug, but I'd rather cut off one of my toes than deface a rifle like that.

Congrats on your rifle! Someday when I leave this state perhaps I'll have one too

I saw one of these yesterday in a gun show. Excellent condition but it came with a $1200 price tag  Pretty high for one of these I think. Was nice to fondle it though :D

Until the Russians wake up, have another revolution, and get rid of Putin and his criminal gang, the US and our allies are not going to play happy with them, nor should we.

The limitations on the imports of foreign rifles was more the doings of the firearms industry lobby as anything else. Surplus was cutting too deeply into their new production profits. That will not change. The firearms industry and the anti-gunners will be on the same side, much like preachers and bootleggers are when it is time for a wet/dry election.

The Republicans are in the process of self immolation so we will probably see a Democrat President. If that happens, you shouldn't expect any relaxation of firearm importation policies.

As far as Russian/Soviet semi-autos, I think you can forget it. Base your collecting plans on competing for what is here now.

Putin is enjoying astronomical approval and popularity in Russia, so I don't expect any revolutions any time soon.

The firearms stoppage from Russia and the Ukraine was due the the sanctions Obama levied on Russia. He went out of the way to include the two large weapons manufacturers in Russia. If and when the sanctions are lifted we may see more imports. I will say, if you see something you want and it is not stupid highly priced..buy it.

Thank you! I don't intend on shooting it until I can turn the gas setting down from 1.7.. Tried the number listed for Black River Gunsmithing, but it looks as though they wrapped their operation up. Going to need to cough up for an SVT gas tool first..
