Mosin Bolt sliding out...

Post by Adam_9130 »

Hello everyone! I went out and did some shooting with my 1955 T-53 and noticed that after I would fire and pull the bolt to the rear the bolt would occasionally slide out of the rifle. ( without having the trigger pulled down). This didn't always happen, just sometimes. Have any of you guys had this problem? What I was thinking was that I would need to replace the trigger, the top of the trigger seems to be worn down a little. I took a look at the trigger sear and it appeared to be OK. Do you guys have any ideas on what to do? Thanks!

Trigger, bolt stop ( sear) or possibly cocking piece, there is wear on one, or all, also the trigger pin hole. If it's worn to the point the pin just falls out then the trigger has more freedom to move than it should.

I've run across some that had the bolt-stop/trigger spring bent in an attempt to reduce the trigger pull. This often results in limited sear engagement, so it doesn't stick up far enough to stop the bolt like you have experienced.

Just a thought but have you checked to see that the sear/bolt stop screw is tight?

Pull the action out of the wood, check to make sure the sear screw is in tight, as well as the trigger pin. (Trigger pins slide out when not in the action, I use bearing grease to retain them, as well as lube them.) If so, check sear/guide rod engagement. As mogunner mentioned, attempts to lighten trigger pull by bending the spring will cause the bolt to slide out. If it is, replace the sear.

Take and unload your rifle and cock the trigger then bounce the butt plate on a rug or rubber pad to see if the rifle goes off without hitting the trigger in anyway. Do it about a dozen times or so. Very often the condition you describe is a symptom of an unsafe trigger and sear package from excessive wear or somebody screwing with it. Needless to say it can be a very dangerous situation needing replacement parts of at least trigger and sear. Trigger pins are almost always lose and liable to fall out of the action if given half a chance. Use of grease can preclude this as mentioned by another poster but just plain being careful not to tilt the action sideways when it is out of the stock makes nothing needed other than a bit of oil necessary. I've learnt something new today. I didn't realize the trigger pins could fall out so easily. I feel fortunate that I haven't had a problem with this as I normally always take a rifle out of the action when I get it check everything over.

Trigger pin and that tiny screw that holds on the interrupter/ejector are good items to keep on hand as spare parts as well as the extractor.
