7.62x54 trajectory

Post by MosinNagant1954 »

Hello,
I am new to Mosins and relatively new to rifle ammo. My question is based on the M-39's 1.5 (lowest), graduation in the rear site that the Finns added. Unless I'm incorrect the 1.5 stands for 150 meters which equals 492 feet. Assuming the sites are accurate at 1.5, at distances less than that is the upward trajectory negligible? Or is the trajectory early with this round/rifle? Will I need to account for rise, say at 100 yards?

Thanks,

Roger

Welcome to the board and to Mosins. My M39 shoots about an inch high at 100 yards with heavy ball. I haven't shot
any light ball in it yet so I can't say about it. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Forgive my ignorance, light ball heavy ball? I have some surplus silver tip, (metal core) is this considered Heavy ball?
Ball, does this have to do with bullet shape?
Damn...I think I contracted it!.... Mosinitis! Just about to order a M-44 and already wanting to follow it up with a 91/30.

Light ball bullets weigh in about 148gr and heavy ball is 182gr. Your silvertp is light ball. Heavy ball is usually yellow tip.

Heavier bullets as a rule shoot higher than lighter ones.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Jim Carmichael stated many years ago that for any high power .270 and up, including magnums, 1&1/2 inches high at 100, puts you back dead on at 200, and 6 inches low at 300. I've done it this way ever since. It varies slightly with bullet weights and magnums, but not much.

Light ball is about 148. Thats rifle ammo. Heavy ball is about 182, thats MG ammo. M 44 sure does get flame with HB. It all shoots good.

I think that 7.62x54.net has charts showing that most 7.62x54r ammo shoots flat at 200 meters. ie the rifle is sighted @ 200 yards.
