I don't collect Mossberg .22s
I now have six different models but I don't really collect them. I just keep ruining in to them and can't pass them up. Yesterday this came in to the shop and I had no choice. This latest model, a 144 Match Grade target rifle, was made sometime between 1949 and 1954. This rifle has no serial number as serial numbers were not mandated until 1968 so it is hard to say the date for sure. The Mossberg 144 is the civilian model of the Mossberg 44US Target Trainer bolt action repeater, which I acquired about 6 months ago. Both have a heavy barrel, a seven round detachable magazine and pistol grip target stock. The 144 has some additional features the US44 does not have, a sliding hand stop and an adjustable magazine. The magazine adjusts between .22 short, long and .22 long rifle ammo. The original Mossberg 130 adjustable peep sight and a No. 106 ramp front sight with 4 different apertures are standard on this model. I guess if I acquire a couple more it will qualify as a collection. Enjoy.

Re: I don't collect Mossberg .22s
I saw two of those 142's at the OGCA gunshow this weekend. I should have bought one.

Make sure any you buy have the proper sights. Proper sights are worth about $125. Mine of course didn't have them, but the buy price was reasonable, and I got the proper sights in a trade for something that was a gift, so I came out ok. That could have been an expensive lesson for me.Longcolt44 wrote:I saw two of those 142's at the OGCA gunshow this weekend. I should have bought one.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

My Brother has a 142 with that drop down front grip on it.
I have a Mosberg 320b (1961) I started on in competition back in 1961 at 8 years old.

Mosberg made a lot of .22's back then!!

Interesting magazine. I know the 42-44 series magazines had a screw-in adapter for .22 short, but that mag is a new one on me. I would just keep picking them up and maybe evem call it a collection, as I run into nice specimens often, but I just can't afford it right now. The one I have may be a Western Field version of the 42, but it has sentimental value; it was my grandpa's.

The real hard part is collecting .22 ammo. I have bought Mosins for less than a brick of .22 ammo is going for now.

I really wish you hated that rifle so you could sell it to me. I have wanted a US 44 for a couple of years, and while researching them I kind of fell in love with the 144. The T-handle knob is unique and from one end to the other these rifles call my name. I might as we show my Remington 341. It is a pre-war (1939) bolt action tube fed sweetheart.

Ammo is available here these days. Our Academy store has made it possible to get my stash back up to levels where I don't mind plinking some.Longcolt44 wrote:The real hard part is collecting .22 ammo. I have bought Mosins for less than a brick of .22 ammo is going for now.
