Strange Mark on 1897 Deutschland marked Tula
Strange Mark on 1897 Deutschland marked Tula
I recently picked up this 1897 Tula. Rifle has the Deutschland stamp and ended up in Finland. Their is a strange mark on the side of the receiver, and I'd like to see if anybody might know what it is.

Here are photos of the rest of the rifle. Very small counterbore. D mark on the side of the rear sight base. The rifle had some surface rust, and the bore was badly rusted. I was able to remove most of the rust without harming any of the rifle.

The markS looks to be German Sutterlin script letters. The first one I can't figure out, but the second one sure looks like a "S".

Coondawg, I think you may be right. Thank you. I never heard of Sutterland script. Appears that it was still being used until WWI. Sorry for the double upside-down pics. I'm on my phone, the second one was supposed to have been corrected.
