Can you help identify this m44

Post by Devo86 »

Hello Folks. Up for sale locally is a m44. Something is off about it and i will attach some pics i have. Couple concerns are the top hand guard is obviously off. The bluing seems to be a matte black but may just be the photos. The other is the stampings. He is asking 300$ and I don't want to offer anything that has been messed with from original condition. Any ideas on what this is and if it has been messed with?

It looks like a pretty descent Hungarian M-44 to me. The price seems to be about the average going price now days.

Stove paint would be my guess.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Definitely some type of duracoat, you can see it's wearing off on the real of the receiver, I'd definitely pass, you can find one for around $300 maybe a little less with the original finish. Good luck!

A lot of gloss to the stock also, maybe refinished? Bubba is alive and well.

I think you should off him a hundred just so he knows it's new real value as a refinished carbine.

I'm going to assume it is not matching. Even in correct refurbished condition the price would be too high. If matching and in the general condition it appears to be, except the "stove paint", it could easily fetch the asking price. But, I'd pass on this one...

Oh, don't know how I missed this... That stock is not a Hungarian stock (which are beech, sometimes elm-and no 02 stamping). Humped Russian stock (birch). Someone bought a barrel and receiver group, painted it and then stuck in a Russian Stock. Total bubba. IMHO worthless. Thanks for checking here first.

The stock was one of my main concerns, one barrel band wasn't even sitting close to the position it was suppose to be. It seems alot of locals will bubba a mosin and think they are adding value, not realizing the atrocity they just committed. Thanks again for all the quick replies!
