M1 Garand

Post by Buckhead »

What are M1 Garands going for now. I know of one that is in great original stock etc. It has NM sights and NM operating rod . It has been glass bedded and was a Shooting match award. He is asking $1,400.00 The bore is bright, there is no rust anywhere and it is overall very clean. What do y'all think about the price?

Need a bunch of pictures and detailed description to even think about trying to appraise it. Down to the markings on the stock and barrel. If it's legitimate and depending one what make the receiver is then $1,400.00 isn't out of the realm of reality. Most average plain jane field grade Garands are bringing $800.00 and up.

My prices are 25 years out of date, that may be a good, and normal price today. Wasted on me, a rifle that can undoubtedly put all it's rounds through the same hole on the target, no way my coke bottle thick glasses will allow it to do that. Better for me is the unmolested service grade rifle, same as the Old Man carried across France and Germany in 1944-45. These are probably around $800 now.

Look at the asking prices on The CMP forum to get an idea of real world prices. Most rifles are priced pretty close to market value there.

They are well above the cmp in my hood. 900 if you are lucky and 1200 mostly. And they sell

It's the M1 Garand, GI Joe's weapon, the rifle that he carried while walking tall across Germany and the Japanese, then later the North Koreans and Chinese. Every red blooded American gun collector wants one, and this rifle they will pay for even if it means paying above " market value" There is more to this rifle among US buyers than "collectability", or "investment value" This rifle is our heritage, many of us have parents or grandparents, maybe even great grandparents who carried this weapon into battle. If I didn't have one I would not hesitate to drop a grand, even two to own one if I had to.

Everyone charges more than CMP, but their for sale forums are where members sell their Garands so while prices are higher there than what you'll pay through the CMP it's usually better than what people are trying to get on Gunbroker

The deals are there if your patient......I looked for two years and got a 'june '45 unrefurbed Springfield for $ 685. Most you see the starting price is about $800. I think some are showing up at pawn shops as we loose our last WWII Vets and their children don't know what to do with them.
Good Luck.

If you want to compete in Service Match, it's worth the $1400. If you want it as a collector, it's high, as unless it can be proven it was glass bedded by a service member shooting for a military team. Otherwise the glass bedding reduces the collector value.

I bought a P.Beretta M1 Garand on Sunday at a gun show and sold it on Monday for $1225 shipped. Here in Kanada, $1000-1500 is the going price, depending on condition.

Garands are the nicest big rifle I've ever shot, and I've shot a few different rifles. Hakims and FN49's are good to shoot, too. FN-FAL rifles are good. Heck, they're all good!
