Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: classicfirearms new batch not refurbished
By the tool chatter marks on the receiver it must have been made late 1942 on a Friday afternoon, nice.

Pretty cool!!!!
Re: classicfirearms new batch not refurbished
I really like the looks of that one. Almost looks like blood droplets on the receiver.

That one is a 1942 Izhevsk, I forget what the others are but all are from the Romanian hoard of Soviet refurbished and then reissued 91/30's such as what Classic was selling.

Re: classicfirearms new batch not refurbished
I had a moment of weakness and bought one of these. I want to blame lack of sleep from having a newborn, but it was just pure carelessness. To make matters worse, it's my first Mosin and I got duped. Ugh. 1926 ex-dragoon. Here's pics of it. Bore is pretty rough.
So what would you do, keep and and learn even though it's your first, or return it and suck up the shipping costs?

History often isn't pretty, and that is what you are looking at there. Could be the erosion started during the war while the Red Army still had it, then continued during the cold war. These rifles have never been issued to a collector before, they are as found in Romania 25 or more years ago, so it's not the fault of some American Bubba not cleaning his weapon. These are issued rifles, this is to be expected, NRA guidelines for antique weapons grading discount bore condition entirely as it is assumed that pieces of history will not be fired.
Try cleaning the bore, scrub it with a copper bronze bore brush and lots of oil, it might improve.

The old circle of death... Probably shoot ok. Just make sure you clean it up and check the headspace. It won't be a tack driver but it might surprise you. Try it out at 50 yards and see what happens. Then hot to boiling water down the bore to eliminate any more corrosive salts assuming you are using surplus ammo and then clean it as you would any other firearm. Good luck.

Trial by fire, try shooting it to see the results. If it doesn't shoot well you have one good looking wallhanger.

Rotted out bore but I like the rest of it, a 5 line Tula, one of my favorite barrel markings on a Mosin. I have a 28 Tula referb in a post war stock and I prefer your stock over mine. Like qz2026 said above, clean it good, check the head space and shoot it. You might be surprised.

Vandeda, it looks like a splice has fallen off of the stock or the stock has been cut on the bolt side right around the receiver?

Rifles from this bunch are known for some creative wood repairs, sometimes more than one on the same stock.

To JYD's point, I cleaned the bore more and it looks better. Headspace checks out OK. We'll see how it shoots when i get around to it.
Titanium Hammer, you're right. I didn't even noticed that until now. Looking at it again, I think a splice likely fell out (can't tell for sure), but there is another splice at the back of the receiver.
There are also no import markings on it. Looked under the barrel & receiver and couldn't find any. Any other place to look?

Check for small print by the front sight. It's not unheard to not have any.

Heck I like it. I would shoot cast bullets through it at 50 and 100 yards and enjoy it. I wouldn't even show the bore to anyone unless they were a intruder looking into the business end of it.

That looks like a candidate for a electronic cleaning......

Don't leave it in the bore for a long time. And hour at a time.
You might be surprised.
I still love the rifle!!
