A Murder of Crows

Post by MeatMarket »

What a blast (pun intended). First attempt at crow hunting this morning. I was using a Flextone Vengeance e-caller and some Classic decoys. The crows were flying in from everywhere and out of about 12 attempts I managed to kill 4 with my Winchester Mod 12 full choke (fixed) and harvested the breast meat. I'm going to wrap those suckers in bacon.

I had a bonus coyote encounter this morning too. So there I was in the backwoods near the property line adjacent to a neighboring field. I spotted a coyote just loitering out there so I switched my e-caller to "female howls" to see his reaction. He peeked at the sound and came trotting my way then disappeared as soon as he spotted me (or smelled me).

I have never eaten crow, well not literally. The ones around my place stay out of shotgun range, but I believe I could tear some up with a scoped .22.

My e-caller was the secret weapon. Without it they would never have come in close enough. Now to learn how to use a hand call...mad skills

What did they taste like? I can't imagine very good.

Not sure yet. I just took the breast meat. I brined them overnight, then rinsed them and put them in the freezer until I get more. I plan to season them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and thyme and wrap them in bacon. Those who eat them claim they taste better than chicken lol. We'll see. They are considered a game bird after-all.

Aw crap, that's the taste kiss of death. Everything that's nasty someone has to say it tastes like chicken. Snake, long pork, various rodents, all taste like chicken....or do if the consumer is drunk enough before partaking of the aforementioned delicacy's. Good luck, but the bacon can save the day, everything except maybe the rats and long pork tastes better with bacon.

That recipe ends with; Cook for 20 minutes, unwrap bacon, eat bacon, throw bird bit to dog. :chain:

Haha, haters' gonna hate. I have eaten rattlesnake and it does taste like chicken but not as good. My woman said she'd be willing to try the crow, and she's funny about food. When I get around to cooking it I'll post it in "What's for Dinner".

I'd try it, but I admit that I would be skeptical.

I'm not skeptical about that Mod 12. They are sweet.

It is pretty sweet, and challenging with the full choke.

I lived in Yuba City in Ca. for a couple years. In late summer every Crow in the Northern hemisphere descended on this town turning everything in to a bird crap depository. Every tree or pole in this town had either a big speaker of some kind or an electric klaxon horn to scare the birds away. They all picked up and left at the same time. Hitchcock's movie was nothing compared to millions of Crows blacking out the sun.

I would have except that they really get upset firing a shotgun in downtown Yuba City. Yuba City is surrounded by rice fields, no trees so the Crows are all in the city limits. It is also the heart of the California duck flyway so duck hunting is at it's best.

You are braver than I am. Glad it was tasty.

It was real good actually. I brought some to work and got a few coworkers to try it. They liked it too. It was dense but not tough and tasted a lot like beef or venison and slightly like dark meat poultry.

My Dad shot many a crow and did not kill any game fish, animal or bird he would not eat. I know for a fact that he killed many a crow. I on the other hand have never eaten groundhog although rumor is they are tasty. All they eat is roots and are "Clean" :BBQ2: I have shot more than one for farmers who generally hate them.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!
