Hello, new to this board. I own 2 Mosins now. My first was a Tula Round 1943 91/30 and is in really good shape.
This question is for my second one. I bought a $99 damaged stock Type 53 Chinese from SOG about 6 months ago. I went and bought a ATI monte carlo stock and installed the mosin in it (took a lot of trimming and fitting and it's still not right). Anyways I just finished restoring a Type 56 SKS stock and really like it so I'm going to try the mosin stock and see how it comes out.
When I installed it in the ATI stock I cut the barrel bands off since it didn't have a hand guard (big mistake now).
I've read the only way to get some new bands back on is to remove the bayonet lug, which I really don't want to attempt. Is it possible to get a set of the older Russian/Finnish Screw down clamps over the bayonet lug and use those instead of the standard ones? Just don't wanna waste the $50 on a set if they aren't gonna fit.
Or any other ideas would be great.
Thanks
Barrel Bands ?
Re: Barrel Bands ?
I presume that your use of the term "restoring" means, "refinishing." You are in the wrong place to be asking these questions. We are about historic firearm preservation, not alterations.

Correct, sorry poor choice of words. Yes just stripping the old fading finish off and re finishing the stock.

You were required to read the rules when you registered here. You must have missed a few. Please take the time to re-read them again.

Drilling and tapping, refinishing of metal parts, or refinishing stocks are not considered preservation and discussing how to do this is not acceptable discussion on these forums.
When the collectors value was altered because of the removal of the front bands, it lost a lot of value in the future(because there really is no way to put the bands back on and "other model bands" will not work),The rifle is and alsways will be an altered rifle. I know the cost of these rifles right now. I also know the cost of them 10 years ago. I would make a bet of the value of these rifles in 20 years. But just like all Milsurplus rifles (like the K98k German Mauser), if they were altered in the past, their value plummets today. There is very little collect ability in an altered rifle. We are here to help new owners (and older ones) to be knowledgeable about this fact and know what they are doing to a military surplus rifle "before" they do it.
We understand it is the owners right to do as they wish to a firearm. We get that......but this is not why we are here. We are a "preservation" forum and you can't preserve something that has been altered. Because of the arguments this action causes, we decided not to allow them on the "preservation" forum.
You rifle deserves to be whole again..... it's difficult to impossible to do that now. Use the rifle and enjoy it for what ever it is now.

Your wanting to put new barrel bands on a T-53? take the front sight out of the dovetail if it will move. Lots of those Chinese are like welded in place......
