Sneak really refereed to the "Tika's" and the "unmarked" units that were made from the end of the war with Russia until the end of WWII. The Finn's signed off and said they would not produce any more arms till the end of WWII so Russia did not have to concern themselves with Finland.

Russia was heavy involved with Germany and didn't want to worry anymore about Finland. That is the reason they signed a peace document with Finland. They wanted all of their assets to go up against Germany.

The 60's and 70's rifle are not "sneak" rifles, they just got caught up with that term. I hate the word "sneak rifles" anyway. Really doesn't tell what was going on there.

The Soviets also appreciated the Finns assisting them in removing the rest of the Nazis from Finland as well.

Sneak is a short-cut similar to Izhevsk. People are lazy. I sure would like to have a late date Finn rifle. That and the SKY have eluded me, but I don't intend to chase them now, if it is meant to be, I will find one somewhere other than Classic Used Cars, I mean Classic (what ever they are)

I listened to good advice and acted on it, and timing was with me in that the "availability/price" door smacked me on the ass as I scuttled through, "base" established.

I don't really trust Classic. But those who want rifles will deal with constricted supply and higher prices from now on. I'm glad that I don't have to. I hope for the best for those who do.

Good luck, and good hunting in the New Year.

20 years ago the prices were really cheep. The problem was, with a few exceptions, that no one really knew what these were or what their history was. It's the early collectors that bought and researched these guns. And since then there has been an explosion of easily obtained knowledge on them. All of us "newer" collectors should appreciate the work these guys did. And, accounting for inflation, they didn't save that much. They just had a huge supply to work with. Hats off to the old farts.. uhhh, I mean the old collectors.

There are no early collectors for the Mosin, serious mosin collecting started around 2000 with the arrival of inexpensive Soviet Mosins in the USA. Milsurp collecting as a whole was only a very tiny group of people before the late 1980's and they were primarily interested in American Revolution to States War period firearms. In the 50's and 60's you collected US or German milsurps and called yourself a milsurp collector, collecting Japanese, Russian, or Italian rifles meant you were some kind of nut. That sort of rifle was just for your kids first cheap home made hunting rifle. As these weapons got older, and the early generation of milsurp collector died off they developed a following among collectors. We are the early Mosin collectors, it's our interest in these rifles that has fueled the research that went into the books and web pages dealing with Mosins. In the 90's few people if any were beating down the doors for even Finn Mosins that were available then for under fifty bucks. Everybody was scrambling to grab US milsurps, British, and German milsurps, or getting into SKS rifles and cheap AK's. I bought some Finn Mosins, and a few SCW Mosins before 2000, but it wasn't until after that time that I bought the bulk of my Mosin collection

I'm on of the old "Revolutionary War" collectors that was converted to the Bolt action rifles of WWI and earlier. I left the Rev War era rifles because I remember someone writing a article (I think it was in the Wall Street Journal) about how good an investment antique rifle were. Better (at that time) that any other investment. Rev War rifle were very hard to find back then because the Internet was just getting going well and was useless. You had to search individual collectors and gun stores (mostly back east). After that article, the price soared and quickly, I was out of the game. I have mind still today, but ....no more. I switched over to bolt action WWII and earlier rifles. Things have changed a lot for Bolt actions in the last 15 years also. The prices being one of them, but really, they are still available for what I cansider a reasonable price. But I was paying $600 to $1500 for a Rev War musket in the 80's and 90's. So paying $400 to $660 for a nice M39 "piece of history" is not that bad in my opinion. I can guarantee you one thing, they will not fall much (if any) in the next 10 years. We will revisit this thread then and laugh when they are pushing $1000.

Everything goes up in price (mostly). Look at real estate. I'm in a house I paid $250,000 for 15 years ago. It's now (even at these depressed values) a $600,000 house here. My first house I paid $$65,000 for. I just sold for $500,000!!!

Your "beginning collectors" today are the advanced collectors of tomorrow. Most of us started with a cheap Mosin when starting on collecting Mosins. Mine was a 1937 Tula M91/30. I think I paid under $50 for it. I still have it and wouldn't sell it for $1000...(well, maybe $1000 :chuckles:  )

Collecting is not about buying a rifle, it is about "learning" about the rifle and it's history and markings. If you are just buying and selling then you are a "dealer" , not a collector. The future of all the "old collectors" are in the "new collectors". Without the new collectors, the old collectors have nothing. Get what you can afford and learn as much as you can....this is what the forums are here for......new collectors. (if you think this is BS, then ask any of the Administrators here what they think about that).

And have some fun for pity sake!! ;mywink;

PS, it's a hell of a lot of fun firing them also...A BIG plus with these rifles. Imagine having a Rev War musket that you don't dare fire. Not nearly as much fun!!!

Just ordered another 91/30 from Allen's Armory.
Recently acquired a Mosin revolver within the last week.
My 1st Mosin Nagant 91/30 came from Classicfirearms. I live less than 40 miles from them.
Held in my hand this past Saturday a M39 Hex @ one of the big Sporting Stores....$599.99!
Now Classic has them, not Hex, but a M39 f/$200.00 less.....my wife is going to kill me.
And no, Classic does not have open door, but will send to a local dealer for you to pick up locally..... :D

Junk Yard Dog wrote:Sneak is bullshit, the Finns didn't sneak anything, there was no reason to hide the making of some M39's in the 1960's when they were already producing their AK47 variant. It's just a story made up by dealers to explain the lack of a date on some rifles and make them sound more expensive. The Soviets could have cared less how many bolt rifles the Finns made by that point, whatever the number the Soviets could and did make ten times the amount.
That sounds like the "Black Widow" P08

Mattel plastic fantastic M16? Remember the M16 is the product of modern space age engineering made by a first world economy in a fully modern production facitity, the M39 is a collection of used 100 year old parts mixed with a few new ones made 40-70 years ago and it still comes close to besting that M16 ( and with commie surplus ammo). Add in wartime production under less than ideal conditions, plus possible wartime use of the rifle and likely years of peacetime use as a training rifle and the feat becomes more impressive. The M39 shouldn't be as accurate a rifle as so many of them are considering all of the above, yet it is anyway, fuckin magic, sometimes a rifle just is.
Well, the M16 was designed to have the same accuracy (4moa) as a Garand and any other military rifle. What happened is that in the last 10-20(?) years a huge industry was built on it being so easy to swap parts on it. So, you can pop your browser open and just order brand new parts -- crazy light triggers, gas pistons, heated/massaging grips, scopes, mall ninja packages -- for it, your wallet being the limit. With this modern industry behind it, it would be quite sad if you would not end up with an accurate rifle. A M39 on the other hand in general has no new barrels or bolts or whatnots: it is an used rifle which has been around the block for quite a long time. So, it has as you said at least 40 years of use against it from the get going.

Don't forget the " pattern 1936" Turkish Mauser. I know a guy in Turkey, a fellow antique phonograph collector, I asked him about the "pattern 1936" rifles and he had no clue what I was talking about. He did his military service in the actual arsenal in Ankara were the Turkish government makes it's weapons including back in the 30's and 40's when they refurbished the Mauser's. He knew the rifles after I sent him pictures, over there they call them.....Mauser's...imagine that. They have a very cool museum of arms and armor over there, including ...Mauser's..

I think the banks still at 1% on Money markets. mmmmM-39 or more silver? Ammo depot has new copper washed non corrosive Mosin food for 47 cents/round. No, it's .42 cents
I just ordered from there, the rounds go up a tiny bit due to their $15 shipping fee, I m hitting at about 45 ish cents/round. But still way better than most places I have looked at of 50 cents/round + shipping fees.
Currently own:
FNH FNX .40 (my ccw)
Winchester SXP 12 gauge pump action (apparently the fastest on the market)
1941 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant (TGI imported)

I received my late date today. It is a 1968, looks to be unissued, has a hang tag, bolt and trigger are as smooth as butter. Bore is about as perfect as they come.

Did you pay for the hangtag option or did they just send you one with a hangtag? Pictures?

Two small stock repairs other than that stock is perfect but with a dual unfinished look/feel like my M41B. It's got the square splice fingers and a total of 6 shims.

Bolt face is a bit rough.

Bore and crown are in like new condition and nothing but a very small amount of dry cosmoline came out when I patched it. Can't say I have ever owned a firearm where literally nothing (other than a little cos as said) came out of the bore before this.

Nothing to clean in the bore? How disappointing! Send the rifle to me, I will dirty that bore up for you so you can have the pleasure of a two day bore cleaning, maybe three, then the universe will be properly realigned :)

Disassemble the bolt. If this was an ex Burns rifle, they are usually clean, but the bolt is packed with grease.
