Quick Ballpark Value

Post by Tuck »

I'm going to look at a 1917 Remington in the next few days. I know nothing about it, shape, bore, import marks, nothing...other than it doesn't have matching numbers & was supposed to have been used in the Spanish Civil War. Is it safe to assume this rifle is worth no more than the going rate of any typical Mosin for whatever shape it's in? I'm betting it's been refurbed like most of them. Anything in particular I should be looking for? I tried a search for value. I figured this had been asked a million times, but no luck & I need an answer from the experts soon. Any advice & info is greatly appreciated!
I'm a realist. What is that you ask?
Well, an optimist sees the cup half full. A pessimist sees the cup half empty.
A realist doesn't care if the cup is half full or half empty because whatever's in the cup is going to taste like s*** anyway.

$250-$300 typical M91 price for a basic mixmaster probable Balkans used rifle. If it has some marking to indicate Spanish use then it's going to be in the upper range of that figure, but it likely doesn't and everybody tries to sell Mosins like this by saying it was used in Spain. The Spanish civil war was never so popular before buyers figured out they could charge more if the rifle was used there, or they say it was. No import mark does not automatically mean the rifle came in from Spain in the 1950's, be sure to look for a tiny import mark under the barrel below the front sight. This sounds like a typical Balkan used M91, it could also be one of the countless thousands of US made Mosins that were sold here during the 1930's and sporterized, then put back to military configuration using Russian parts when M91's started to get harder to find and more expensive. Stalin did initially send Spain some used old M91's to aid the Spanish communists before he got serious about it once Hitler started arming the other side, then it was crates of brand new M91/30's. Some of these well used M91's did get imported here, but if there is no made in the USSR stamp, or other clue to indicate Spanish use then it's just another M91.

A Remington wont be a refurb like the 91/30s we see everywhere. If the handguard is there, people have been asking and getting $350 for mix master US made mosins until recently. If its missing the a handguard those run nearly 100 by themselves.

And unfortunately, for the idea of keeping them intact, the stock, handguard, cleaning rod alone are worth $350 as parts plus barrel bands and other parts value.

SCW look for distinctive no metal on the handguard. Look for the simple Spanish type of cleaning rod without the knurled nob we are used to seeing. Many SCW rifles have renumbered serials maybe only matching bolt and receiver or the butt plate and the receiver. They also show signs of Finnish ownership at times too with and SA there at times too. Right now the market for tifles period is slow and getting lower so you may see a good buy if you are wise in how much you offer. Good Luck! Bill :D
