No! And no again.

I don't want to get hit by a BB gun, but bird shot vs buck shot is an old thing. Buck shot wins. Bird shot might work, but why play around with it. 00 or #1 buckshot. The buckshot wins. Put a heavy coat on vs #8 and the same vs 00 buck.

This guy has done some testing.

Hah! Been there done that. It was #6 Remington Nitro-mag. About 25 yds away. It didn't go through my canvas hunting coat, but it sure knocked me on my ass. One pellet found skin, nicked the top of my lung and put me in the hospital for several days.

The birdshot vs buckshot penetration is well documented, but the philosophy of keeping your pattern as tight as possible took me a while to by into. After patterning my shotgun with different shells at different ranges, and figuring in I might need/want to take a 25 yd shot at a coyote, it wasn't hard to see why you want your pattern as tights as possible for as long as possible.

I'd have to agree with JD. At 12" to 24", the shot would still grouped together pretty much as a solid mass. I believe the box guy was shooting at 12 feet? Of course the amount of charge in the shell would have something to do with it too.

I use 000, or 00 buck also Fred, I put the bird shot bit in there because sometimes that may be all a man has at hand. If that is all he's got he should know how to use it most effectively, and close in gives it the most punch, but is also the most risky as then you are close to the intruder, he could make a grab for the gun. Around this part of NY finding a box of no4 shot, or the skeet loads is easier than turning up a box of buck. I send off for all of my buck loads, but someone new to guns, shotguns or otherwise might not have learned about online ammo buying, some people even think it's illegal, but then this is NY were everything is illegal so they can be forgiven that misconception.

I definitely agree birdhsot will do the job at typical room distances, Junkyard. No argument there. I was just pointing out from real life experience how quickly it loses energy to penetrate, which was a good thing in my case.

Dam lucky for you all right, that must have hurt like a bitch. Only guy I know was hit by a shotgun blast took a slug in the chest from maybe 20-30 yards or less, he didn't make it.

I remember letting out a yell when they put the chest tube in. Other than that my back where I fell onto a little shrub or something hurt more than anything. It's not like the blast knocked the wind out of me, it just threw me backwards.

Like a customer who came in once with a raccoon face, black eyes, swollen nose, bruises,. We asked what happened to him and he says "Heart attack" Heart attack? What, from the exertion of the fight? NO, he passed out and fell on his face. Accidents rarely happen while you are lying down in bed, or sitting in a secure chair, ouch!

What happened to the guy that shot ya? The guy who shot my friend tried to stick his gun in his mouth when he saw what he done, but it was too long and his friend was able to reach him before he found a way to reach the trigger.

He felt really bad naturally. We were pretty tight, but it took him a while to come in and see me. I can't imagine how he felt, but probably like the guy who shot your friend now that I read that.
I was part of his bad streak of luck, I mean bad, the other two events, also. Really terrible. He kind of dropped out of the picture after a year and changed his lifestyle. Started going to church, going to plays instead of rock concerts, different group of friends. I dropped out of the picture as well, as these were my hunting buddies and I hunted the following year, but then stopped. I couldn't stop flinching when I heard a nearby shot. I'm probably over that now, but still don't technically hunt.

The shooter was a guy up from the city for a days hunt on ground he had never walked before, he saw my friend clearing brush behind a rental property he owned and mistook him for a deer, he was wearing a brown chore coat. One shot, and 20 minutes later he died in the arms of a state trooper while asking for his little girl. That funeral was hard, very hard, the kid, all of 5 at the time asking Mommy over and over when daddy was going to get there at the wake for over two hours the night before. That was it for me venturing into the woods during hunting season, 15 years later it's even more crowded. The shooter got a 72 hour hold at the local hospital, in the end it was ruled an accidental shooting if stupidity can be called accidental. I understand the shooter ended up in a mental facility, probably long since out by now.

Unfortunately that sort of thing is not uncommon, poor training, buck fever, and crowded woods all make for a potential disaster. We have had homes struck, and at least three non fatal shooting incidents since the 90's. That's just here.

Wow, that is a lot of accidental shootings. I have been lucky, have not been shot, and don't personally know anyone that has been shot on purpose or accidentally.

I assumed most of you here would jump out of your bedroom in a pair of boxers with a Mosin Nagant with the bayonet attached and charge any intruder.

There are fewer places to hunt and more hunters wanting to use them in the Northeast, go farther upstate and things open up, but within a hundred miles of the city there are 20 hunters for every deer, or so it seems. There are also far to many "Hunters" who touch a gun only during the season, and can't be bothered to learn some skills.

Private land ain't to safe neither, my friend was on private land, the shooter on private land. Public land will just get you killed a little faster if you don't like waiting, but private land is no safe place if you boarder a wooded area around here.

They heard you were coming Des! lol

They will get it changed, Nebraska is so small in population, no one really ever pays attention to what goes on here. The local Governments had free reign for a long time. But, there are other groups involved now and they are helping to make things a little more sensible.

But hey, I'd still be up to visit you someday!
