Finn no shims

Post by Pitbill »

New to this forum. My friends who focus on modern arms do not understand my interest in Mosins. I got my first hex some five years ago. I just acquired a Finnish Mosin 1944 SAKO from a reputable seller. I took it apart on my workbench careful not to loose the shims under the barrel. Guess what. No shims. I wonder if I got a dog or somebody else lost the shims (hard to believe since the underside of the barrel was heavy with cosmo.) I have not fired this one yet but I wonder if perhaps this has happened elsewhere, or if my accuracy is bad perhaps I should shim it up. For that matter if anybody knows of an instruction on how to shim I'm all ears.

Not every Finn rifle needed shims. Shims were used to correct problems with action and stock alignment, not every rifle had these problems. I would say that roughly half of my Finn Mosins have shims, and only a few have large numbers of them, like more than 6, the average is 3.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

As for the plastic fantastic crowd, in 100 years the M39 will still be ready to do battle, solid steel and wood, even brass sometimes, how long with the Mickey Mouse crap hold up? I remember seeing M16's being used by the State Guard that had tape holding them together.

Welcome! :)

I had an M39 I picked up last Friday out to the range today. No shims. Deadly accurate at 100 yards, even with my poor eyesight.

Mine has one shim which is under the rear tang. That one must have straightened the rifle out.

You can never tell by the outward appearance of the rifle whether it will have shims. Some of mine have none, others are loaded with them.

This Finn captured m91/30 has them under the tang, around the lug and under both screw in the mag. It took some work but the Finns got it to shoot straight.

Sometimes the shims tell their story of where they were installed. AV3 is a weapons depot in Kupio.

Thanks everyone. Turns out there is one I just didn't recognize it as such. Between the screw and cleaning rod retainer. Pinned to the stock. Next time I remove the barrel I'll look for markings.

Yeah, I took apart an M28 about an hour ago, and three shims came out, fortunately all from the same place and in order so they were easy to put back. Careless on my part though.
