That sort of finish was never used on any Finnish rifle. Sorry to say it but it is just an Internet fairytale.

Earlier models had stain and lacquer finish. On m/39s and on post war rebuilds the finish was rifle stock oil finished with BLO varnish.

Like Zeebill said, original finish with m/28-30s was stain and rather shiny 4-hour Pomo lacquer.

That bit about the stain and separate Pomo Lacquer was the only reason I even suggested maybe removing the rest of the finish the first stripper missed removing. I will not even suggest what would come next but I think most of us know the answer. I would look on it as a repair but many would not I know and I respect their thoughts too. Again it is a crying shame that the first interloper into the original finish did not recognize the finish for what it was and leave it alone but now the damage is done. I have more than one 28/30 with a gummy and tacky sort of finish which is original and can understand why the first owner did try and remove the finish. We are all mislead by our own feelings at times and we become our own worst enemies I am afraid. I need to let this subject rest I fear. Bill

I am once again humbled by ZeeBill  But I live and learn. :facepalm1: I'm pretty sure this waxy oily shit on my M-39's isn't varnish..... I don't know about electrocleaning anything. What Bill said or oil and steel wool or brass brush is all the derusting it needs,...coat parts thinly w/vasoline to prevent rust, don't try to make it look new.......Preserve it! :soapbox: SBP......more Mosins than Donald Trump

You need to sort and maybe characterize what you hear and who you hear it for a little more maybe. I hear things here and other places online that I kind of figure are not right and rather than always be arguing about what is fact and what is not I just ignore the people who spout it and move on. Draw your own conclusions and then try and find stuff that supports what you think. I have been at this far longer than many and made far more mistakes than anyone I know of on the web. Even an old dummy like me has to learn a certain amount if he keeps plugging away!!! You younger guys starting out need to ask more questions when you are misled or don't quite understand what someone is trying to illuminate for others. There is no shame in asking questions although many people have an ego that won't allow them to admit they don't know or understand something. Good Gravy that is the way one learns things and frankly when you stop learning you are totally useless in my mind. Keeping an open mind is very important too and many people have trouble doing that too. So basically I listen and try to get my overloaded brain to absorb things and keep an open mind too. Like everyone else I am not always successful at that. Bill

I de-rusted this hot little number the other day and while doing so found some interesting new markings I hadn`t noticed. Unfortunately they were rusted over so I can only guess at what most of the letters are. I found them on the left-hand side of the barrel, just behind the rear sight. It looks like the say "HARAT-HONA H ODIN5", underneath that I think it says "WETH-OT", but I`m fairly sure I`m butchering that because of the aforementioned rust. Anyone else have similar markings?

How about Marathon Imports Wethin, and the state which I am forgetting due to old age  I think it was in New England somewhere but I will be darned if I can remember which state! Come on young'uns help the old fart out. You have found the import marks and to my memory that is an odd place to find them. Another mystery some what solved! Bill :D

That could be it, but now I`m wondering why it was pt so minuscule and right there. The text is microscopic.

That`s it all right, thanks for the link! Makes a lot more sense than HARAT-HONA H ODIN5!

Kroil and Big 45 is all you need to use. If you can't get all the way into the pitting bottom, use a brass brush. Thoroughly wipe off the excess and give it a coating of CLP and you're good to go. I am assuming you removed all the grease from the metal first.

Already been taken care of, thank you for the information. I`ll use that next I need to de-rust a shooter.

Nice score!
As they say the pen is mightier than the sword...however that also means the pen is far more dangerous than the sword. The sword can take your life or your limb but can not take your freedom, the pen can. A wary patriot watches the pen as it can steal his freedom. The wary patriot knows he can use the pen to take power from those who wish to use the pen for evil, but keeps his rifle close by his side "just in case"!

Well done! You might want to go see the " Sporterized Enfields" just to make sure one is not a #4 Mk.1 (T) You never know....
