An H & R Leatherneck Model 165

Post by SKhiSm 59-66 »

A friend turned me on to the H & R Reising Model 65 a while back, many of them were USMC trainers for the Garand and after the war production transitioned to the Model 165 Leatherneck and later still to the Model 150. After trolling for a 65 for some time I found that the ones I could best afford were often doctored and not satisfactory but nice specimens of 165 were available, and I selected what I think is a nice example. Also they made a fairly well-known USMC Model MC-58 Model 65 Modified that is very desirable. Here are some pics of my 165..

They came equipped with Redfield # 70 (or 75 ?) micrometer peep sight. Max the Preventor contemplates his next move in the background.

And finally probably the rifles most unique feature, the charging plunger located handily in the fore-end right where your hand already is

The sling is by Swiss Craft, I purchased it separately, selecting it because it was similar in appearance to the Boyt that many come with, like the rifle it was manufactured in Worcester, Mass., and may pre-date the rifle.
I love the rifle and would recommend one to anybody, it's a truckload of fun. I still hope to knock down a Model 65 someday. Thank You for looking.

Very clean example, excellent find! I find a lot of .22's but I have yet to come across one of these.

That is a very nice rifle. I got hooked on Mossbergs earlier this year and now have six different models.

Sure it wasn't a trainer for the Reising 50 & 60? It has the same charging method, the thumblever in the forearm. Neat H&R whatever it was a trainer for! 8-)

The LGS has a really nice Model 42, but they want $350 for it; just can't do that now.

Thanks guys. I'm fairly certain they were built as Garand trainers, there's a couple of pretty extensive threads and write-ups on Reising available but I didn't post the links because I have trouble remembering from one board to another what's allowed. I failed to mention the 65's were parked while later commercial models like mine were blued, also 65's have a Garand style front sight with "ears", although when I was trolling them I found that often the ears have been removed or the front sight changed.

I'm very interested in "40" series Mossbergs as well LC44, especially those with a Mannlicher stock and 42MB in particular. I've noticed that the rifles I like best are like me, getting older and heavier but still fairly reliable.

That is sweet. I have a thing for the old rimfires as well. Especially the Mossys. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13086

I've had the rifle for a while and I may not be able to buy again possibly for as long as until about this time next year :b sad: because of another project (vacation spot/bugout) but as soon as I can get back in I'd like to get one of the 40-something Mossberg bolt action. I also found when shopping for this one that H & R had quite a few guns I took to, some were even in a Mannlicher stock and I may be looking to pull together a small collection of H & R guns. I saw an old listing for one of their shotguns, I think it was Model 158 that I liked real well..it had a 36 or maybe 38 in. barrel and to look at it, it looks as if the butt pad and the muzzle probably aren't even in the same zip code.

I did this thread a while ago about four of my Mossbergs, http://209.140.27.248/~russianm/viewtop ... bc#p362646. Since then I have picked up a 42M (b), ( A Mannlicher stock, bolt action clip fed), and a 44 US Property, (Bolt action, clip fed). Haven't taken pictures as yet.
