Is this a Russian Imperial Eagle?
Is this a Russian Imperial Eagle?
I recently decided to purchased my first firearm, for years I had planned on getting a military surplus rifle, a bolt action, and I knew mosins were the most affordable option. I happened to come across a site which recently posted about their new shipment, and discovered they still had on offer a hex option. I ordered and after waiting for 3 weeks, I went to see my rifle for the first time. To my surprise the hex receiver mated to the Izhevsk '25 barrel was marked! The tang is dated 1917, is this really one of the Russian Empire's receivers? It looks a bit like they tried stamping over it?

Re: Is this a Russian Imperial Eagle?
Yes, that is the Imperial eagle. This rifle started off life as a dragoon in 1925 and then was later updated to 91/30 sights and handguard. It was common for the Russians to reuse older receivers when they were available.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Ha! I suspected as much, I'm absolutely thrilled to have lucked out and gotten such great rifle with so much history! It happens to have all matching serials, even on the bayonet, and head spacing passed the go gauge.
Thanks for the quick reply!

It's great seeing all the history in these. Even though it's a refurb you can still see some of it's story in that recycled receiver for instance. It can be fun looking at all of the individual parts like the bolt, trigger, and other bits to see what combination of arsenals' and even eras' parts were assembled at refurb to build the rifle.

Yes each and every part has its own individual history and was marked all matching during its refurbishment. As far as the eagle I am thinking you might have an over stamping there along with the eagle? The picture has just enough reflection where I am not at all sure? Any thoughts from others? Nice rifle regardless though! Bill

The overstamp with the commie crest was commonly done on these. Sometimes the Finn's let them pass, but not so the Russians.

Nice rifle but why the 3 week wait?

Re: Is this a Russian Imperial Eagle?
Yeah that is an interesting over stamping of the Imperial Eagle with the hammer and cycle and wreath around it. May have been done at refurb time? Look at some of the eagle stampings over in 7.62x54r.net and you will be able to pick out the over stamping of the eagle. Cool thing for sure! Bill

Very nice Velba, but hey we need lots more pictures. Now really show that beauty off as soon as you can.
Re: Is this a Russian Imperial Eagle?
I too would like to see more pictures. You have an interesting bit of history that is worth a bit of time to look over.

Maybe the tang date would shed some light on why the sudden overstamp. Got my ideas. BTW, nice rifle with nice deep stampings.

Re: Is this a Russian Imperial Eagle?
It's hard to tell with the angle of the shot, but it looks a bit like the overstamp on my 1924 Dragoon.

Gotta love all the stamps that the Russians/Soviets threw on these, makes collecting all the different variations an endless task! I had one with an over-stamp, it was a 1927 Izhevsk barrel on a 1901 Izhevsk receiver. Was my favorite shooter for a long while but I wound up selling it to help purchase a much more interesting rifle.

Sorry everybody, Got slammed with work [ tis the season ] and finally had some spare time, came back to check on the thread and WOW, you lot seem just as enthusiastic about it as I am! I'll have to take some time this week and take some pictures of all the stamps and markings I'll start another thread for my M44 I got at a local gun show. I currently have pictures of that, externally at least.
Well aside from the fact that I ordered one before they had gotten to the crates it was in, they had to ship it across the country via ground. Ordered it on a Friday after working hours too.Longcolt44 wrote:Nice rifle but why the 3 week wait?
