Sand and pine needles
That is what I found in the barrel channel of my newly acquired Finnish M24 rifle. I went to the Ohio Gun Collectors Association meeting last Sunday to pick up a 1934 M27 I had reserved from my Finn connection. While I was trying to decide between two '34 M27's he had brought for me to choose from he asked how I was set with M24's. I told him I didn't have one but someday I would like one, big mistake. After I was done fondling the M27's and choosing the one I wanted he pointed to two M24's he had set on the table. I thought to myself, “ It can't hurt to just look at one as I had never seen one in the wild much less two.”, second big mistake. Please enjoy the attached pictures of my new M24 Lotta rifle.
There are some numbers stampings I need some input with. The original serial number has been retained and a Civil Guard District number has been struck out then looks to have had the original number re-struck on the receiver. There is also a number stamped on the rear side of the receiver. Any input on that number or the re-issue of the original serial number is appreciated. It also has a Civil Guard logo stamp , the [SA] and D stamped on the barrel. This rifle has a Bolher-Stahl stepped barrel with a 2 ¼ inch counter bore, (This is the deepest counter bore I have seen.), and a two piece early style spliced stock. There is a spring on the trigger that takes up any slop and makes for a true Finn trigger. There is only one plug type repair on the underside of the stock and somebody thought it needed an additional sling loop on the butt stock. It came with the early type sling hanger and a brown leather sling. More in-depth information on this rifle can be found here at the RMNF M24 page, http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/fin ... index.html I am going to post what I feel are the best informative pictures but if you want to see any others I took a lot so just ask. Enjoy.

I have found both in many of my Finn Mosins, particularly the M39's.

Over the years I probably could have reconstructed Coney Island Beach with all the sand I have found and removed. Pine needles yeah we have had them too. Neat rifle for sure!! That rear or bottom sling swivel is something I have never seen on one. It would be nice to compare it closely with a another known Finnish gun but I know of none offhand to try it with other than an M39. Looks sort of like it but I would have to take one off an M39 and do a side by side comparison to be at all sure. They have a few little differences from what I have seen from time period to time period also. That would say to us see what my Finnish soldier owner or Armory Sgt. did to improve me. Numbers are often confusing on older well travelled Finnish rifles. Can you read the lined out Civil Guard number? Does that follow any of the other numbers. I would say that one number that runs crookedly was more than likely and importer added number. Have seen very few numbers added on the wall like that one though, that is indeed puzzling to me?
Presume you got these from Bob? Being full of sand and needles is refreshing to see. Numbers may be vexing but that is not a bad sign though! My one step barrel 91/24 is 140xx kind of close to your apparent non step barrel. Nice rifle for sure! Congrats! Bill

Yes Bill, I did get it from Bob. If you look close to the added sling holder you can see where somebody carved out a flat spot to mount it, not a professional Finn job.zeebill wrote:Over the years I probably could have reconstructed Coney Island Beach with all the sand I have found and removed. Very nice LC, looks like Robert fixed you up. Was hoping to go to the show but spent the weekend with dad since he couldn't make it to the marina.

Very cool what can be found inside some of these old relics. I've left the sand an vegetation inside. And even though it was creepy, I even left the hair inside a Romanian refurbished Soviet M44.
Can't help but think that I would be wiping away history by cleaning them out.
Nice stuff, Chuck!

Maybe they did their basic at Ft. Jackson, SC. I found sand and pine needles in the M16A1 they issued me for Basic Rifle Marksmanship......

Re: Sand and pine needles
That is one nice looking rifle. I too have yet to get a m24. Someday I'll find a nice one.
I have a few Finns with that same dark grease and pine needles. If they are in good condition I leave it alone and put it together keeping it original so the next owner can find how these rifles were used and then stored before being sold to the US.

He still has the other M24 that I didn't buy. It is just as nice as this one, I came close to choosing the other one instead of this one.Lee-online wrote:That is one nice looking rifle. I too have yet to get a m24. Someday I'll find a nice one.
