VEPR 54R - Corrosive Ammo Question

Post by knatori »

Hello
I just recently bought a VEPR 54R along with some corrosive ammo. I plan on shooting it this weekend. I will be shooting it Saturday. How long do I have until the salts do damage to my bore? I will not be home until Monday and possibly not be able to clean it until Tuesday. Is this too long? Thank you

Just clean it at the range before you leave. Make sure you get inside of the gas works too. You have to clean everywhere the corrosive gasses may have gone, not just the bore.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Doesn't the VEPR have chromed bore? Or am I lost here?

If it is chromed the bore can take anything so cleaning does not have to happen during the same day. But ofcourse it should. No reason to delay it.

Like millman said, clean the gas system well and check also inside the receiver.

How long you wait can be influenced by the humidity in your area. In any event, get in the habit of cleaning as soon as possible.

You can take a VEPR apart in a matter of seconds. If you don't know how you can find videos on Youtube to show you how, but once you know how to take it apart you'll see how easy it is.

As to the cleaning of it, you can take a bottle of water, windex (the kind that has ammonia, simple green, etc) with you to the range and wash some down the barrel, gas tube, and bolt after shooting to flush out the salts from the corrosive ammo and let everything air dry. That, or you could take a bottle any aforementioned liquid to wash off the salts and take a bore snake with some q tips and whatever cleaning/lube agent you use and give the bore/gas tube, bolt a cleaning after shooting until you get home and can really get in there to do a good job.
