If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

TC Renegade 50 cal. Flintlock

Post by Jbob »

Doing a little digging tonight and ran across this rifle I've had for near 30 years. Taken a few deer with it many years ago when muzzle loading hunting was old style only.

Very cool. I have the Renegade in 54 and the TC Hawken in 50. Both caplocks. I would really like to luck into a flintlock Renegade some time.

Me too. I got lucky when I lived in PA and found one of the older Renegades in .50 percussion. They are great all around rifles. Mine shoots patched round ball best. The 1 in 48" twist just doesn't seem to do well with conical projectiles.

you need to try some "TC" maxi balls, I think Lyman makes a mold? They were designed by TC for there 1/48 twist barrels from what I remember.
they where the only "slug" style bullets that shot well in what is now my wife's .45 percussion TC Hawken that I built from a kit in the mid 70's (many brass inlays).
I won an state offhand match with this very fine shooting .45 (round ball).
also built a .54 flintlock renegade around that time, made a "poor boy" out of it with fixed sights, set up for 90Gr. FFG and a .530 round ball.

I have a Investarms .58 cal Hawkins Hunter. Investarms is the same rifle (basically) as the TC.

Mine loves conicals. My shoulder does not.

Very neat setup you have there... All I think I've ever fired through this rifle is the already made Buffalo bullets the weigh a great deal. Been so long ago I'm not sure if they're made anymore of not.
I do have the mold as you have to make those bullets but have never got that deep into black powder shooting other than the revolvers.
Helping to operate a large tire shop I've saved lead and given my reloading gunsmith friend well over two 55 gallon drums of it over the past couple years. I've saved back maybe 6 five gallon buckets for myself if ever needed down the road. My guess is in another 5 or so years you'll not see tire weights made from lead anymore. I'm seeing changes made already to other things being used in place of it.

Not hard to do, just you have to get the equipment and go very slow at it. Mistakes are not good when working with lead.

Wheel weights sometimes have other items in them to make them harder and tougher. The BP rifles like the lead soft (pure). If not, the accuracy will drop a lot. Wheel weights are great for modern firearms. They actually need it a little harder. I don't fire my Hawkins much anymore. Too hard on the arthritis in my shoulders. Beats me up too much......D

We haven't had any scrap wheel weights come in since 2012 or so. Even plumping lead has slowed down as the building trades have sputtered to a halt here. I have a lifetime supply hoarded away of every hardness of lead pure to 50/50 and some stuff I don't even know what it is yet.

I pick through the wheel weights and nearly all of the vehicles from the last few years have weights made of steel, zinc, or synthetic.

I have been on the lookout for one just like this, 50 or 54. I have taken a ton of deer with a Renegade, and maxi slugs, both calibers shoot ragged holes at 50, and 2" groups and under at 100yds for me. Taking a deer with a flinter is on my bucket list.
