'44 Izhevsk Ex-Sniper

Post by Luthierseye »

Got this one yesterday. Bought the "Bent Bolt" 9130 from Samco and I am pretty pleased. The 1944 date and the condition of the bore indicates little usage before WWII ended. The bore, as mentioned, is excellent with strong lands and easily cleaned to shiny bright. The stock is kinda beat up with large dents at the grip on both sides, but all else is excellent. The bolt matches the barrel and the tang is stamped 1944 so it probably is original except the floor plate and butt plate. The finish on the stock is different from my other Russians. This finish is closer to the Finn models-a little different refurb(?) I guess with no gloss at all and an oil type flat look. The rear sight elevator(term?) is chrome on this one; anyone seen this B4? All the parts have the Izhevsk stamp. I checked headspace and firing pin protrusion and gave it a good cleaning and lemon-oiled the stock so she is going to the range tomorrow! Can't wait to see how she shoots.

Fine looking rifle...Somebody forgot to put red varnish on it??? Hooyah .You gonna PU scope it? with the sights, expect it to shoot 6-12" high, normal without the bayonet......or maybe not.....some of them don't...
You probably won't find a better bore in a 91/30....looks like a keeper....SBP.....63 MN's

Looks real nice I hope you don't alter it permanently as suggested by a poster above in violation of our forum rules. I also would like to point out nothing like all Mosins shoot high and there are so many things that can effect where a rifle will hit it is kind of foolish to suggest that will happen without trying it out first. Enjoy shooting it and let us know how she shoots! Congrats! Bill

No, permanent mods are out. I may put a Mojo rear peep sight on it but that's all; and that is not a permanent mod. Target pics tomorrow or Friday :-)

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.
