Wednesday range report

Post by jimpierce7 »

I woke up. I had big plans for going to the range. At this point it is about the cheapest thing I can do. And still talk about it in public. The guns were out and ready..............

I looked out the window and WTH? RAIN? Are you fracking kidding me? RAIN? GAH!!! :bigrant:

I remained undaunted. I loaded up the van after a good breakfast and a few shots of espresso.

The sky looked ominous. I'm thinking this will be futile. Where I shoot is covered. But the target and the 100 yard walk to that target are not covered. So I turn down a side street to turn around and go home. Go shoot tomorrow I guess.

I saw the end of the storm right behind me!! So I sent my happy ass right back down the road. Now, that sun never made it to the range but it didn't really rain much. It only rained while shooting the M27 and double date MO 91/30 (my other "red") The target will explain why. lol These two will both probably shoot high at 200 yards.

But first!! Lets see some pretty scenery!!

not bad for a rainy day!!

this is who came with me..........

M39, M27, MO double date 91/30 and my M44

M27. I failed bad trying to adjust for height. Yes, top to bottom is the M27.

Image

top half is the MO 91/30. lol

if I was feeling bad about that, M39 fixed it.

and the M44 didn't hurt much. Once I got it sighted in. It is the only rifle I have that has to be stepped up to hit 100 yards. Depending on the ammo of course as to how much.

What is all that green stuff? Good shooting, I said this before, so long as you are on the paper that's all that matters. These rifles are 50-100+ years old, how many mechanical devices of that age will still function at 100% efficiency? How many people do you know between the ages of 50-100 that still function at 100% efficiency?
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

I noticed you hang all your targets sideways. I tried that once but laying on my left side to shoot made it hard to hold steady. You might do better if you hang them strait, set on the bench, and lay your rifle on a rest of some kind. Just a suggestion.....SBP

Sounds like a nice spring day. That handgun target has seen better days.

I lay them sideways so the fit. lol One on top of the other. I really don't expect what I get from a few of rifles in all of them. It did take me awhile to realize that sometimes, the bad shooting isn't me. Sometimes. lol

One thing is for sure, with going to the range every time I get bored, has taken a toll on my ammo supplies!! I'm hoping to be stable enough to start shooting off hand soon. I know a guy locally that competes is all the old war dog shoot outs and he wins. I hope to spend a couple days with him before to long.

Jim it looks like you are getting some really decent groups. Some look far better than what I can do. I always figure what the heck I am enjoying it and that is what counts. I see some of the same miserable old farts everyday complaining about this and that and aches and pains and when I am at the range I may be limping around but I still smile a lot! Many people today lack that simple bit of enjoyment and simple challenge in their lives and I feel sorry for them. Good Shooting and I hope you enjoyed yourself too! Bill :D

I'm taking the Remington out tomorrow to use up that ammo you loaded for me. I'm going for a good time.

You might want to shoot at shorter than 200 yards. :P

I thought you were retiring the Remington to the wall?

I have some ammo made just for it. And I'm hitting the range so often it might as well enter the rotation too. Its kind of like shooting a smooth bore. All the fun, none of the accuracy.

 There isn't anything wrong with that at all! My Remington can't hit the broad side of a barn either but I still like taking it to the range from time to time.

There is a couple of sources for bullet molds that go to .316", Noe molds is the primary one, but i am wondering if going that big will cause problems chambering a round. Those bullet you have there Jim are sized .312", & if your bore is .315+ it might be causing the key hole effect. Even, still i find it exiting that the Remington gets to boom a little again after all these years. Kind of like starting a engine that has been sitting idle in a old muscle car in in some forgotten garage.
