These are fairly common but no where near as common as the black painted ones. If I were looking for a period correct refurb, I might pay a slight premium for one with the brass handguard end caps. Just don't shine them when you get the rifle. Leave them alone... What is the year and armory of the rifle? Type stock?
Nowhere near as common as the steel ones are but not that rare either. I only have 6 Mosins and 1out of the group has the brass caps. It is a plus to have them in my book.
They can be found on any 91/30, it's purely chance. They can also be found on the 91/59's.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

If you want to collect refurbs they might make you buy them but I find most older non-refurbs tend to have brass end caps. Now if you really want to get picky I have seen copper end caps and matter of fact one of the Dragoons I have for sale at shows has them. I have seen steel end caps with copper rivets, brass end caps with steel rivets, black painted end caps with brass rivets, steel end caps with steel rivets, and probably any number of other combinations I have forgotten with time. I frankly have never bought a rifle because of what kind of end caps it might have as I find it trivial. The other stuff I look for is far more important to me. Bill
Don't shine a brass end cap? If you clean your gun the're gonna shine some Don't clean your gun??? I Ya'all startin to sound like a bunch of Yankees. Junk Yard Dog ain't a gonna like this, I will probably get disciplined again SBP 62 MN's

There is a difference to cleaning an end cap when you clean a rifle, and using a buffer wheel or fine steel wool to remove all patina. I believe that was his point.
It only takes decades for the old age patina of old brass caps to look their age. If you want to polish them then go for it, but you sure can't go back and fix it, ain't got nothing to do with cleaning your gun.
