Anyhow, I absolutely love your special rifle. Wow what a find, and was probably stored in a corner from a couple decades ago when the guys buying these didn't yet know what it was. Just beautiful. Congrats on a fine keepsake. :P
Horse blankets, a collector term for the large size paper currency of the 1920's. The same guy turned up a few guns last year, I bought an English cap lock double off him for a C note, it needs cleaning up, he had a stainless steel Ruger Old Army he wanted $375 for, but I have one already.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Dang Dolk now I will have to look at the ones I have to see how close they are too. I was frozen out of the shop for a few days here as the temps caused the frost heave to lock the front door up and make it not open. Talk about security of the collection huh? Even I could not get in there. Those dang dead bolts really can lock up good if the ground moves a bit. Took and pumped a bunch of two part foam with an industrial machine a couple of years ago and this is the first time I have had a problem in awhile. I think the fact that the rifle has been Finned is almost expected as they were the only ones who used them after they were bought from differing sources or captured. You kind of expect them to be Finned or they would not have survived all these years. I think I might have one that is without Finnish markings. By the way one of mine is counter bored 5 and 1/4 inches and still shoots great for a 91/30 at least  being that is about as long in usable barrel length as one. Congrats again! Bill

Can't be too far off. They only made so many of them that year! My shop got all the way down to 46 degrees yesterday. High of 75!!! I was surprised ..... no snow outside! :D Everyone seems to be in snow right now! Now you know why I stay in Calif.....California boys don't know what to do with that white stuff! We get confused and try to water ski on something like that on it. Well, t-shirt weather here. Good luck with that frozen door.....D

It's not even T-Shirt weather inside here... Just cleared the driveway again at 7 degrees and windy. Yesterday, went down south on some business and met Tula Tom for dinner. On the way home it was snowing and blowing so hard I, for the first time, got off the eway (could literally not see in front of the car) and had coffee with the lady running the Marathon until the squall ended. Snowed and blew the 70 remaining miles but could see and drive about 50.

My Chatellerault 91/38 is N3657. I researched it and it came in the first shipment to Russia from France.

Thank you all for the comments.

Do you guys think the reciever has a chance of being original to the barrel? Is that the 'witness mark' I'm seeing there on top of the barrel?

Does anyone know what the "D" under the serial number means?

Its is very likely the barrel and receiver are original to each other. Taking it out of the stock will show the tang date to confirm this but also show the grease hole that is only on the early Chatelleraults.

The D is a stamp the Finnish put their when they modified the throad to accept the Finnish D166 round.

A lot of the Chatelleraults have only a C in a circle on the tangs, I believe one of mine is like that. The witness marks will be under the wood on the bottom of the barrel. Just remember the screws in the bands go the opposite ways if you take it apart. It is a real good idea to do that but many are afraid they will break or lose something but really the Mosin is one of the simplest bolt action rifles I know of. Why even I have sort of mastered it? Sometimes I think that is a very questionable statement? Again one nice rifle! Bill :D

When trying to find info on your mosin, sometimes what is not there tells just as much as what is.

Good find me a 1892 and I will trade one of my 1894's so I have a complete run of the years. You get your choice of them by the way! Do you sense my frustration here? Not wanting to steal the thread as that is indeed a very hard one to find and I started long before many of you have been around! I have been Oh so Lucky through the years. Bill
