1921 Tula M91 Infantry rifle

Post by racerguy00 »

Sometimes deals can still be found online. This uncommon date m91 was listed on a popular online firearms classified ad site for nearly a month with a modest price with no takers. I was surprised to see it was a local ad also. After getting better pictures from the seller and an offer of an even better price from him I couldnt pass it up. When we met, he said he had intended to bubba it but felt guilty about it. He had all the tacti-cool parts ready to go. I'm happy he didn't.

Typical looking Balkan import, with a rear sight wedge, barrel band shims, and a pine cone stamp. One escutcheon is an oddball, larger that the others and it has different screws. Mix-master, with a force matched buttplate and mismatched bolt and mag floorplate. The barrel is partially scrubbed, but the date and the early post-WW1 communist RFSFR marking is clearly visible.

The stock is RAF and C marked, which shows up from time to time, and is dated 917r under the buttplate and is solid. Handguard has a tight crack that I'll fix, but I'm happy it has one at all. Enjoy the pics. If the full pic doesn't appear in the post, click on it and it should link to the photobucket picture.

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Good score on a early twenties M91  What would your guess be on the most uncommon/hardest to find date from that era?

If you lump all the revolution and post ww1 dates together, I'd go this way in scarceness from my limited experience:

1918
1926
1919
Then beyond that I'm not sure.

Please tell me this would include 1926 Tula exdragoon. :crossedfingers:

Sorry but no. Lol. I've only seen a half dozen or so full length m91s from that year online though. A few if not most were 19025 over struck dates.

That's a nice rifle - congrats!! From the few 1921's I've seen for sale, that's about as nice as they come.
I'm not sure I know the meaning of the RAF C letters on the stock. I don't remember seeing or reading about them - can someone enlighten me a bit? Thanks!

I'm coming up empty on the RAF marking's meaning. It's listed on some reference pages and a few examples including 91/30s have been posted over the years but so far it's unknown.

I have a database with close to 100 late M91's in it. 1918, 1926 and 1925 are the rarest with 5x examples each. There are over two dozen 1919's. despite the mystique surrounding that year, and higher prices, it is much more common. 1920 and 1921 are less common than 22-24, which in turn are less common than 1919.

Also, I know of 2x 1919 Izhevsk M91's and 1x 1920. More rare than any Tula's in my opinion.
