Re-snipering a ex sniper is considered Bubba modification. The reason is that as preservationists we consider a ex sniper to be in it's correct condition as it is. They have a important place in history in their current condition and seeing the welded holes inside the receiver area gives them a distinction all their own. So, while it can be done, it shouldn't. Imagine also the fact that someone could do this then try to pass it off to someone less knowledgeable as a real authentic sniper. They were decommissioned as Snipers usually when they no longer meet the requirements of a sniper tool.

I agree. It seems that re-snipering an ex-sniper was all the rage a few years ago when I took a break from collecting. While I think the allure of putting together a "sniper" sounds cool, the truth is that it will never be a legit sniper again. I'm keepi g my "ex" as is, a curious sub-variant of Mosins.

I recently acquired a PEM ex-sniper (refurb) with the holes still drilled, which I posted, and one of the responses I got was from a member exulting that my find wasn't such a much because I can't mount a scope legally or the Fed ID number will be concealed. I instantly questioned his bona fides (why would such a thing be said unless he is doing it himself?) and then pointed out that I have no intention of re-snipering an ex-sniper.

I'm not sure but if it didn't have the holes welded up it's probably not really considered an ex-sniper. If it was a recently imported refurb bought straight from a vendor then it may have just missed that part of the process but if not it may be one someone disassembled here. What do you guys think?

A few PU have come over without plugged holes, but a PEM would be quite rare to have survived and then been mixed up with them. I don't think PEM were sent to satellite countries either.
