Welcome to the board, Farming and plowing snow are hard work, but it will keep you running around outdoors and a lot healthier than some stuffy city office, you might stack on a few extra yearsafleetcommand wrote:Good morning Mosin & Milsurp board members, I guess this is where introductions are made.I'm a long time Military Surplus Firearms enthusiast, not much of a collector though as the information is more the focus than owning objects. My interest is a twist on the theme of where firearms fit in history, in particular where firearms technology pushed manufacturing technology. Therefore most of what I'm interested is those from the late 1800's until the turn of the century. Mosins hit all the hot buttons.
SO I've been a Mosin fan for a few years, bought three without knowing much about them. "Sinned" once already by converting one into my personal "Farm" & "Fun" rifle as I also enjoy shooting sports... it's perfect for me and it has achieved all it's design goals and adjectives... and that's about all I'll say being respectful of this form's focus. My other two are more in line with this forum as they have not been modified in a non reversible way. (I did read the rules) Both are 1930 era Hex receiver Mosin's, one I grafted a Red Dot where the rear sight base was. Didn't alter the barrel. Did remove the original sight base from the 11mm dove tail. Work's well with my old eye's and has allowed me to continue shooting.
The only other "MilSurps" I have are a near 80% 1896 Swedish Mauser that I would like to move closer to original. It does have all matching numbers so maybe it is as close as possible. I also have a sporterised 1917 Winchester Enfield. It carries a Leupold scope and has been my hunting rifle for 30 plus years. That's it. I don't own many guns. This Enfield may be more interesting than the introduction may suggest. I picked it up out of a pawn shop and it had already been hacked. The question is when. It may be one of those 1920's era modifications. The barrel/bore is excellent. it's been converted to "cock on open" and now has a nice walnut stock. It's as accurate as any typical under 600 dollar hunting rifle you can buy now... So It continues to be my main hunting rifle. I have bought sold several "current" bolt gun's... criterion to stay in my safe is they had to shoot better than the old Enfield.. It they didn't... they eventually would be sold. I still have the Enfield and no other Modern Bolt guns.
That's about it.
Other data? Used to be a Manufacturing Engineer (Ex. CAD/CAM/CAE type), now a farmer & snow plow driver. How things have changed! But still love the out doors and spend most of my non-sleeping time working & having fun out side.
Oh yea... My farm is in CNY

Hello,
Planing on picking up a Westinghouse M1891 Mosin for my birthday which I have on layaway from a local FFL. Glad to have this forum as a resource to properly care for this piece of history.

Re: New Members, Make your first post here!
Just picked up my first 91/30 Nagant, a 1938 Tula with all 4 serial numbers matching. The weapon appears to be in excellent condition with no obvious non-original parts. Can someone suggest a site/source to aid in deciphering the numerous proof and inspection marks? Also, does the imprinted number under the buttplate have significance? Thanks in advance.
Re: New Members, Make your first post here!
Just signed up to get some more information on my Mosin. First surplus rifle and first firearm for me. Always been fascinated with Russian and Soviet military weapons (Russian history major) so I finally decided to bite the bullet. I'll be posting pictures soon, I appear to have a bog-standard but very well preserved 1942 Izhevsk 1891/30.

I have been lurking for a while. I finally pulled the pin and joined. I am the proud owner of a 42 Izhevsk 91/30. I have learned a great deal already just reading the posts. Thanks for such a great forum.
Re: New Members, Make your first post here!
New member, just joined today. I actually purchased my Nagant about 3 years ago and I have never shot it yet. I will probably do more lurking than anything. But I will probably ask questions on some markings and dates if I my search Fu is off.
