No don't refinish it. It would look prettier perhaps, but not look correct and actually make it less attractive to collectors.

I have a M-53 Chinese that was hard to hold without getting a splinter. There comes a point where it becomes necessary . I sanded on it some and put some oil on it...That son of a bitch shoots a 2 inch group in the bullseye at 100, but I wouldn't have shot it the way it was. It's still rough, but now shootable.....SBP ..........62 Mosins and lookin

Here we go again.

This is not the place to discus refinishing and bubbaring these rifles. Do what you want with them but we here don't want to know that you basteredized them. :angry4:

Why not buy a replacement handguard, and keep the original in a desk? It wouldn't be "correct", but you'd have a suitable shooter that pleases your eye more and it can be put back the way it left the arsenal after refurbishment in about 30 seconds.

Prop queen's the Mosins ain't. The refurbs already make them look too pretty. These are weapons of war, they are made for killing your fellow man and nothing else, let them wear their age, dings, scratches, chips, worn shellac, blood pitting and all the rest.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.
