While his boys got all his nice rifles, I got this weird short stocked Russian 7.62x54r cal. rifle. I had no idea what it was. About that same time my brother had just bought his first 91/30. After seeing his I realized I realized I had a 1937 Mosin Sportser with not one match series number. But it did belong to some one I admired and it does shoot. A few months latter my brother bought a M-44. I liked his carbine but not the bayonet. I was trying to find a nice M-38 when I found by accident a 91/59. This gun is near perfect and a great shooter. Still looking for more carbine but hard to find good deals.

Welcome to the board, you should open a new thread on the Mosin forum so more members will see your question, Trigger or boltstop are broken maybe?

I think I may be confused on where and how to post.
I have this awesome 1943 m44 that doesn't seem to have refurb marks.
The notch for the bayonet appears to have been done by hand.

Just purchased my very first Mosin today at lunch. I have not even had a chance to really look at it closely. It is an Izhevsk I assume as it has the hammer and sickle as opposed to the star and arrow, having said that, compared to every other gun I have ever owned this weapon is covered with stamps, numbers, marks to an amazing degree. Very cool. So once I get it home and look it over I'm sure I will have a ton of questions. I will try and read up first before I ask those questions that already have a hundred threads addressing them. I will also take as many photographs as you can stand. Looks like a great place to learn and I'm looking forward to it.

I'm late to the party. I sure wish I would have caught the Mosin bug a few years ago (as does my checkbook). I've been stalking this forum for awhile and I've learned alot, so I thought I should join and hopefully contribute.

Since I've only been collecting for a few months, I couldn't have picked a worse time. The haydays are over and the future availabilty is open for alot of speculation. I've been satisfying my colllectors urges by buying any 91/30's that aren't modified and are being sold below current online market prices, primarily off Armslist. I've bought quite a few that I consider to be bargains, based on the current market. My most recent purchase was a forced matched, 1930 Tula hex with a post war stock, in very good condition for $150 which I consider a bargain. Anyway, just an example of the struggles of starting my collection in this market.

One question I would like to post. Are there any replacement parts, not available aftermarket, that you foresee as being in short supply down the road? Perhaps based on wear and tear or on restoration? I would also like to pose the same question, but with respect to accessories (cleaning kits, lanyards, bayonets, etc). I missed the boat once and I'd hate to miss out again.

Thank you

Welcome to the board, you will always be able to find Mosin parts, the huge numbers of these rifles that were produced ensured that parts will be around. Over time they will become more expensive, you might want to lay away a trigger pin, bolt stop ( sear) trigger, firing pin, firing pin spring, the tiny screw on the interrupter ejector, and definitely as many extractors as you find. Trigger pins and tiny screws get lost, but extractors can break, and they do.

Welcome to the board, something crude looking on a wartime Mosin stock? Yea, that's normal, add in years of use and they can get rough. We now know that the refurb marks simply indicate this or that facility in the USSR that did the work, Some of these facilities used the familiar box with line stamp, or empty box, some use none at all, all are still refurbs marks or no. I am sure you realize that the 1943 dated M44's are trials rifles made in low numbers under 50,000 that first year, and today they are considered a very good find.

Hi everyone,
Bought my first Mosin about 3 months ago. I should have picked one up two decades ago! Great fun, straight shooting rifle.

Thanks for building this great resource forum.

Hi, I'm Ted, I didn't know it was going to take an act of congress to navigate this forum but I'll try. I just have a question about the sling slots on my 1929 hex mosin. I have a 1932 hex and it has the screwed in or on slots. My newly purchased 1929 has no insert in the rear slot and a small sliver of metal in the front slot and a squared off nose (I don't know what this is called yet, my 1932 is rounded off). After blindly fumbling around or your forum I think one of your members shed some light for me.I think my 1929 has a war time stock on it (I'm guessing from the armory restoration). I'm wondering if I should replace the stock or try to upgrade the pieces. Any ideas would help. Thank you,Ted

No act of congress Ted, just an act by me, think of me as the man at the door of the speak, you say Mosin sent me and I let you in. Welcome to the board

Welcome Ted. No you should NOT replace the stock or the sling inserts. They're what the stock came with. These rifles went through the soviet refurbishment process and are basically rifles built from the parts of many other rifles. That means you'll have parts from different arsenals and years all over the rifle. It's perfectly correct and expected the way it is. This might shed some light on things. http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/ref ... index.html
