Classic Firearms - PU Sniper ID/Authenticity

Post by Obsessive »

Hello, all.

I posted last week in this forum in regards to a 91/30 sniper that I purchased from them and if they were reputable.

I received the firearm at my transfer dealer today. I checked the bore (a little dark, but great rifling), headspaced it (just fine), and checked the scope out (nice and clear). While these things checked out, I want someone to confirm my initial thoughts on the gun.

Humor me, here.... I'm thinking it's an original 1943 Izhevsk sniper as it has (what I assume to be) the original scope number lined out on the left hand side of the barrel. It also has proofs above the lined out number. The scope mount has the serial number of the rifle electro-penciled on it. The receiver, magazine floorplate, buttstock, and bolt are all matching numbers. I have, however, noticed that the stock looks rather 'rough' around the scope mount area where the 'drop point' is for the lower elevation screw. This area shows 'squarish' cutouts, but the adjacent areas (front and rear of the mount) are radiused (hurried production???). The bolt handle appears bent and not welded. Scope appears to be a 1944 unit (steel eyepiece) from plant 357. The thing has enough cosmoline on it - scope included - to choke a donkey.

Heck - the above is based on some quick internet research. This stuff is nebulous. Any input is appreciated...

Looks like a refurbed M91/30 PU sniper. Is it a Tulsky? You'll need to post some pictures of the whole rifle, and some of the export mark if it has one.

EDIT: It's a Tulsky - came with the gun (manual). Preserved 6/13.

I still find it funny they call it a 'carbine'. What the heck do they consider a 'rifle'?

Here are some more photos - I hope this helps.

If you're wondering if there's a possibility that it may not have been a PU sniper at one time than you can relax. It's one of the many refurbished PUs that have been coming in from Russia and started life as a PU. The part about it being an original 1943 PU well yes for the most part but it is but it's been through the refurb process just like most of them we see for sale. It's not "original" so to speak because it's been refurbished. It's an authentic PU though. As for the carbine thing I'd say that's just a mislabeling on the factory's part. Remember these guys over there speak Russian and sometimes things get lost in the translation. The Molot that I have came with a book and has quite a few mistranslated words and phrases.

Very nice looking rifle. You got some nice deep cartouches on the stock as well, that's always a plus in my book!

I'm curious what the bore truly looks like after a good 'scrubbing' since it looks so good now.

I see that Classic and AIM raised their prices. I'm glad I got one when I did.
