Needed, expert eyes and opinions on 1909 Sestroryetsk
I know it is not a perfect speciman especially with the mismatch numbers. My top dollar was $375 in my head but I just couldn't see $15 stopping me. I really wanted a pre 1900's but have not seen one as of late. It appears there are some very bright lights above the rifle due to the dark shadows, so I am hoping the stock just looks lighter/shinier than it really is. It fills a hole in the collection. All opinions appreciated!!!!

Nice score
I think the stock looks good, just a little shine from the lights. Looks like it missed the Finn scrubber also, and I like that splice up front. Congrats

You would think by now I would be more confident in my purchases but I'm just like "Chicken Little"
. After being burned a couple of times I get real leary of online purchases.

Looks to be a typical early 1990's import Finn M91, these stocks tend to have that look from 3000 wipe downs with Finn wax while the rifle was in service.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Looks like a nice purchase! Congratulations.
The stock got my attention, because it appears to be a Romanian sliced stock. That's kind of odd to see on a Finnish captured rifle, but I've never seen a Finnish stock spliced up at the fore-end like that. There might be a little more history in that rifle than you thought!

+1, nice rifle but looks a lot like a Romanian stock splice,

I have a 1909 Sestroryetsk, but its in a Finnish capture in a Finnish stock.

I frankly believe everyone calls those Romanian repair splices wrongly as I have many rifles and seen many rifles that had no Romanian ties and were spliced like that. A splice like that will hold up better than a butt to butt splice on a stock when the rifle is fired and most gunsmiths who do wood work and are knowledgeable have told me that is a well know fact for many years in the past.
You Folks will have to forgive me if I am wrong in this comment as I have had a 3 day weekend covering many miles in the car so I am a bit groggy
Did anyone notice that little relief to the rear of the second barrel band parallel to the cleaning rod cut on the bottom of the stock? Am I going crazy or it that something new to me and others? Comments Please?
I had a stopping price for any sort of normal to me M91 lately and that is no higher than $400 and that seems to work for me. So I would say the price was OK for todays standards. Any time now JYd is going to tell me I have finally gone the rest of the way to senility with my pricing restrictions but it is what it is I am afraid. Frankly I would agree with him pricewise but these days new collectors have upped the anti quite a bit. Saw a guy spend $700 for a Mitchells Mausers PU sniper over the weekend and he had no idea it was a fake. When people like that are around they tend to blow things way out of proportion I am afraid.
You wanted it, you set a limit and reasoned what you bid so why not? Oh by the way photographing anything on a red blanket is bound to bend the light spectrum crazily so don't fret till you get it. Bill

You know that is the sad thing about me and photography in that I actually took many college level courses in it and TV production and considered changing jobs to that career field at one time! I would have starved to death! I absolutely suck at it!! But strangely I do remember something about back round colors and red was a no-no. Believe it or not grey was the best color to use as it was a neutral color. So maybe the immortal Grey blanket is not such a bad idea? Bill

Have to say for myself, it is the first time I have seen the Romanian Splice on a Finn rifle.
Not only is it a Romanian splice, the stock is entirely Romanian produced. Check the offset grasping groove design.

Not that it would prevent me from placing this in my collection, but the action and furniture were mated here in the States.

I have my nose to the screen and still can't see a splice, need better pictures with clear closeups that aren't dark and blurry. Better yet, just send me the rifle so I can examine it .
