Welcome to the board, let us know what kind of Mosin it is and we could help.

I've taken off the rear sight and mounted a scope. I usually shoot without a bayonet. Does the bayonet merely change the point of impact, or does it actually alter the consistency of the rifle? I have the scope adjusted so that I'm usually hitting within a few inches of where I aim, but I'm wondering if putting the bayonet on would improve the spread of my shots. Has anyone compared the spread with and without a bayonet?

Welcome to the board, scopes, adjustments, none of it changes the fact that your rifle is a refurbished Soviet WW2 battle rifle with use and wear on it coupled with the Soviets being OK with minute of man performance in the first place. What you have sounds like normal performance from a refurbished 91/30, some will perform better, some worse, all are relics of war.

What you have is an M91, the original Mosin this is why it is long. Peter the Great is Tula Arsenal, obviously with that marking it's production is from before 1917, this is the rifle the Russians fought WW1 with, and was also used in large numbers by Finland. That pinecone on the stock is a Bulgarian property stamp, this was placed on rifles the Bulgarians captured from the Serb's and Russians during WW1 that they later used themselves. Sometimes called a Balkan rifle, these were imported to the US back in the 1990's. You should open a new topic in the Mosin forum and provide some more pictures of your rifle with it's markings so more people will see it and maybe we can tell you more. I would not expect to see any Izhevsk bow and arrow stamps on a Tula made barrel, you may have them on other parts because parts got mixed around during refurbishments. It's normal to find Izhevsk or Chatellerault, Remington, Westinghouse, and Sestroryetsk parts on any M91.

If i paid too much, oh well, if i paid too little so much the better. Thinking of giving it to my nephew, but before that i just want to get an idea of the details. From what i have seen it was manufactured in 1934. I tried tracing proof marks, but after 2 hours i thought i reached the end of the internet...... :D
here are some pics. Any info on this beast would be appreciated. It looks like all the serial numbers match. But I don't know if these are original numbers or import serial numbers. Basically I am clueless on this piece.
Very nice, all matching, 1934 Ishvesk, hex receiver. Market price on that is north of $150 with the right collector.

The import serial number is om the left side of the receiver.

The 51.28 inch length means it is an original Mosin Nagant 1891. This is the original design for the infantry. Look at the date on the barrel, it should be 1925 or earlier.
There are a couple of differences beteen the 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r.

First is the size. The former is 39 millimeter long cartridge, the other is a 54 millimeter long cartridge. This measures the length of the case. The second difference is that the 7.62x54r is a rimmed cartridge. The 7.62x39 is a rimless cartridge.

The 7.62x39 is used in the SKS and AK-47. The 7.62x54r is used in the Mosin Nagant rifle 1891, 91/30, the variants of Dragoon, Cossack, and the M38 and M44 carbines, and the Tokarev SVT-38, AVT-40, and SVT-40.
It is also used in the machineguns produced by the Soviets/Russians such as the DP-28 up through the modern machineguns, and the Dragonov and similar modern Soviet/Russian sniper rifles.

Hi All, I'm new to the Mosin Nagant. I knew they were popular, so I bought my first one from a guy, still "new in box". It's a stamped 1943 91/30. I've done a bunch of research on it. Some markings confuse me because I seem to be missing some. I'm pretty sure it's a Tula, but I guess I'll learn as I go. It is still packed in cosmoline. Thanks in advance for all the questions I'm sure I'll be asking. No pictures yet because of the low quality.

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and new to guns in general. I have already acquired 2 Mosin 91/30s, a 1927 Izhevsk and a 1943 Izhevsk that's been modified. I also have a couple of vz2008s as well.
