First Mosin

Post by sniper58 »

My combo pack finally showed up. Mosin Nagant 91/30 and a 1000 round case of Norinco ammo (2011 production)

I ordered it from a dealer here in Canada. It was $399 (+ tax) with free shipping.

I ended up with a 1942 Izhevsk. The stamping on the receiver is quite faint. (Ivan must have been getting tired at the end of the day) With the exception of the trigger guard/magazine assembly, the numbers all match. The trigger guard assembly was lined-out and stamped with a new serial number. The TG assembly has a star stamped beside the front guard-screw hole (Tula?). There's a star on the spring under the rear sight as well Everything else that I've checked closely has Izhevsk stamps. All sorts of stamps all over the wood and action.

The wood is in excellent shape, no gouges, serious scratches or gouges. Shellac is nice and even with no peeling. The metal parts that had shellac on them cleaned off easily by scraping with my thumbnail. Bayonet has the same serial number and attaches and removes without too much swearing.

This is the sheet that was glued to the inside of the lid of the ammo crate.

Welcome! :D

Very nice 1942. The stocks on these aren't always in such good shape as yours is.

Is that ammo ok to use in a mosin? I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that the machine gun stuff wasn't really appropriate?

You got a deep red stock in beautiful condition. Congrats on a nice rifle. As for the Adamo I am not familiar with it, but it looks to have a steel/lead core in a jacket. 1000 rounds should hold you for awhile

I think it should be OK.
I converted the velocity from the sheet and it says 2690 - 2739 fps. Should be right in the ballpark. Pressure converts to 44,092 psi (average)

Here's a Youtube video of from a guy that did an in-depth review of the ammo. He was using a Mosin (didn't blow up). He dismantled a bunch of it and provided average weight of the powder charge and projectiles. He even sectioned a bullet to show the construction.
Originally, the ammo was advertised as non-corrosive, but the ad's changed now. I might have to do a nail test to see. Either way, I don't mind cleaning my rifles.

There is some pretty rare Russian aircraft MG ammo that is over pressure and not recommended for rifles. The rest is ok.
His ammo is Chinese and it says right on that paper that it is for the Type 53. He's OK.

Edit: I read it wrong, but it is still good. I have used some of this stuff.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Sure you can have just one.

One ex-dragoon, one ex-cossack, one 1891 of each issued year, one M91/30 of each issued year, one hex receiver of each issued year, one sniper of each scope type of each issued year, one M38 of each issued year, ...

and then you can have one of all the above from Tula and Ishvesk!
