my first nagant

Post by knucklebucket »

well joined yesterday, because I bought my first nagant. 1937 Izhevsk and I love it. after reading all night and morning today through this forum, found the cleaning and disassembly read and just completed my first full take down and cleaning all the cosmoline off of everything. I can't wait to shoot it but got to buy gauge and check head spacing first. glad I joined this forum lots of useful info.

That's a nice Mosin, not a Nagant.

Checking the head space is a good idea but I and many others have shot refurbs without checking. I now check all my rifles as part of their first cleaning and inspection.

That's a nice first Mosin Nagant KB. My first was a rough machined 43 Izhevsk. I still remember that first cleaning of that one, what a joy. Now after about 40 of them (not all Mosins) it seems more like work than a joy. I see you got your counterbore tool out there, looks like it should shoot about a 12 gauge now. Just kidding.

:welcome3: to the forum.

Looks like a pre-war stock. Hard to tell from the pic.

Very nice, lucky these Mosins aren't near as bad to clean as something like the Turk Mauser's were back a few years. Think a chunk of heavy duty wheel bearing grease with a rifle in the middle of it. Not cosmoline, cosmoline is our stuff, Uncle has money and uses the very best to preserve metal parts, the commie rat ****'s used cheap regular grease. Real cosmoline is more a wax than a grease, like wax you melt it to get it liquid enough to apply with a brush, it dries to a wax like coating.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Welcome to the forum. Lee's correction goes to something else. What he's pointing out is actually a realistic difference as these rifles are generally referred to as Mosins or Mosin Nagants around here. A Nagant is the Pistol with the 100lb trigger, lol. Nice looking rifle and as far as headspace checking goes. If you didn't see it Okie Headspace Gauges at the top of the page has them and these are not the cheap counterfeited crap that other places are selling these days. The field gauge is the maximum headspace allowable but most get No-Go and Field set. You'll use them many times over the years and trust me this won't be the only Mosin Nagant you'll own. http://www.okiegauges.com/sales.html

Welcome to the madness. Maybe it is out of the picture but I don't see a tin of 440 rounds of 7.62X54r anywhere.

In truth... it's a Mosin Nagant.

http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/Mosinprimer.htm

"The official designation is “3 line rifle, model 1891”. A “line” is a unit of measure equal to 1/10th of an inch." I like to call it an MN for short !!

"The Mosin-Nagant rifle was adopted by Russia in 1891 after trials of several repeating bolt actions. It fires the 7.62x54r cartridge and is a combination of designs by Russian Sergei Mosin and Belgian Leon Nagant whose primary contribution was the feed system."

Cheers !!!

In the past I read about the Mosin and the it stated the term mosin-nagant was a term coined here in the US. The Russians call it Винтовка Мосина, Mosin rifle. Nagant was credited for the magazine design but it was a small part of the rifle and his name was not given to the rifle.

I cannot find where I read this or when or where the nagant was added to the mosin title but if you call is a mosin, everyone knows you are talking about the rifle, only mention Nagant and that is referring to the revolver.

My brother gave me a beat up Mosin Nagant years ago. I had so much fun working on it and firing it that I now have five more - and one on the way. They're great rifles and a blast to shoot. Welcome to the club.
