1916 Winchester 1895 Musket / Russian Contract

Post by Miller Tyme »

Another ‘Grail” rifle has been scratched off my list of firearms I want and I couldn’t be more pleased.

It’s a 1916 Winchester 1895 Musket / Russian Contract Rifle, one of approx. 300,000 rifles Winchester delivered to the Czar between 1915-1916. This rifle also appears to have been shipped to Spain during the SCW and has the Spanish MP8 flaming bomb Cartouche stamped on the butt stock.

The bluing is about 20% and the bore is dark but has good rifling. The butt stock has a spliced repair and what appears to be a rack number ( 10 ) stamped on it. The hand guard appears to be a replacement but by who or when is unknown. The action is crisp and it cycles dummy rounds nicely though I am still debating on how much range time, if any it will be receiving.

There was another one not as nice that posted on GunBroker right after this one with an Opening bid of $1900.00 and a BIN of $2500.

It lasted about 4 days.

I dont see the XN3 marking on the right side of the reciever... If its not there is not a russian contract... All i saw from the pics on gunbroker the russian upside down U acceptance mark... But the contract marking i dont see... If its not there its not considered a russian military rifle... It was accepted by winchester but never made it to russian military...

I have seen the ones that stayed stateside and they all are missing the Russian acceptance mark.

Also explain how it got to Spain? The US didn't send them there.

Here are a couple more without the [XN3] and also went to Spain also

  Congratulations yet again Miller Tyme, absolutely beautiful rifle. Very neat splice/repair in the butt stock. If you do decide to shoot it, I'd like to hear a range report for it. That's the problem with some of these more collectible ones, I would absolutely have to take it to the range and put at least a couple rounds through it. I know on some I shouldn't but I have very poor impulse control

Miller I looked at mine closely last night and I have the two marks, the XN3 and the circle or u-like thing by the caliber marking. Remember I told you there was another one on the butt stock and I didn't remember what it was? Well I can't find it in the light of the shop which is lacking a bit with some tubes being out or reduced a bit. I kind of remember it being very hard to spot and looking something like a cleft note from a music tradition or something. I had a real time spotting it when I got it and had to be outside in the natural sunlight to see it finally. Nothing like that today here so I will have to wait a day or two to look again. My repair to the fore stock is like the one you have on the butt stock and to me that shouts Soviet type of repair. Like I said in the email I had been coached to look for a rifle that was used hard to be sure it made the trip to Russia and might have seen some action. Using that information I automatically eliminated any of the real high priced ones that were super expensive and pristine. It seems that if they went to Russia or else where and saw the action they looked like it too. Think you did well and as I said the rifle is in far better shape than mine is and yet it seems to have seen action by it's look too. Congrats again and as I said I loved shooting mine. Bill :D

BTW Bill, next time I'm over I want to look at that baby! I'll bring dad along too, as he has always wanted to see one of them also, I guess it's one of those rifles that fascinates everyone who sees one! :D
