Technical question - help?

Post by RevMBR »

I want to get some input here regarding the prohibition on altering. Suppose someone comes across a sniper bolt and puts it in a standard 91/30. Would that constitute an alteration, as it is a genuine Mosin part, or are no changes allowed of any kind? Thanks for the help.

If it is not like it left the last official arsenal, and the change is permanent, then it is considered humping, and frowned upon. The bent bolt is not permanent, as long as you retain the original bolt with the gun. There is a reason that the non-sniper weapons have straight bolts.....they work better. The only reason for the bend is to clear the scope. You need to be aware that changing the bolt requires a head-space check to assure the rifle is safe to shoot.

Well there are regular 91/30 that came with sniper bolts from the arsenal refurbishment it last had. Supposedly they used up the extra sniper bolts from the snipers that were put back to normal 91/30 configuration.

Now if you are buying a bubba bent bolt, you are not destroying your rifle but are aiding and abetting bubba buy buying his crap.

Thanks SA1911al. I do have the original and will check with my FFL for the headspace. BTW - the change was only the handle section, using all the rest of the original bolt. I realize the central part is the part that touches the shell and see why the check is necessary. Appreciate the info, being a neophyte here. Learned a long time ago from dear old dad, I can learn from everyone.

Keep in mind that collectors and those who wish to preserve firearms are trying to maintain the originality as these rifles came from the last arsenal, whether that be when it was first made or from a subsequent refurbishment. When you start adding parts because they might have some appeal for you it muddies the waters of what the rifle was originally intended to be. History plays a hug part in collecting.

Which destroyed a viable piece of a bolt... One more part butchered & gone forever. I would have gone out of my way to find an authentic bent bolt; Not some metalshop creation. Buying that part supports those who part out perfectly good rifles with no respect to the rifle as a whole.

And yes; There is a following to the Mosin Nagant, Capitalism is King & with so many collectors, shooters & enthusiasts a need for parts is a viable one. Extractors fail, stocks crack & parts need replacing. The simple fact is we need those parts & part guns over time. It is the elephant in the room we wish wasn't there.

Preservationism is a hard road to travel sometimes, but we members of this Forum believe in it & stand for it.

The odds of finding an original, verifiable, sniper bolt body are astronomical. And as Rongo has already mentioned, the Bubbafied, welded, atrocities just feed the whole destructionist industry. And, I ask, why would you want a sniper bolt on a regular 91/30? It handicaps you with a mechanical disadvantage; they are much harder to work than the straight bolt is.

Am I the only one who hates the way the sniper bolts feel? They seen awkward to me compared to a K98 Mauser, or any sporting rifle bolt. I prefer the straight bolt handle.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Nope. I don't like them either. Though I'd suffer with it if I had a PU.

Agreed. But then I don't have a PU sniper & I'm fine with that. If one falls in my lap at a cheap price I might... Otherwise I'll stick to the original straight bolt handled, iron sight Mosin as it was issued thank you very much.
