M38 whats its worth?

Post by z31jaime »

ok so I posted my M38 for sale in a local gun group and was amazed at how low the offers are. Highest offer is $225 shipped with everything. or a bunch of trades for Old useless $99 guns. I haven't posted it here because I really don't have time for shipping. I work crazy hours and getting to a shipper is going to be a PITA.

so my question is whats a realistic price? #1 i don't need to get rid of it. its just fine sitting in my gun cabinet. #2 Shoots great. put 100+ rounds through it already and loved every one of them. #3 I would like something a little more modern. but I'm not giving this up for a $120 .22 plinkster. I can buy that myself.

I was asking $300 for local sale with everything included... am I over reaching?

1942 M38
M44 stock
all numbers matching
navy sling.
counter board to the front sight so maybe 1"-1.5"
rest of bore is in great shape
30 rounds of ammo
6 stripper clips
Hard case
2 ammo pouches

Added... Padded butt plate for my shooting comfort... still have the original numbers matching one also. And I painted the sights with some glow in the dark paint so I could see better in the dark gun ranges around my area. Comes off with nail polish remover so its not permanent or anything.

Yes; I think you are a little high. The rifle looks like a typical Izhevsk M38 in a post-war M44 stock with a significant counter bore and a decent, although not great bore. If it had an original M38 stock, that would be a plus. As is, I would call it a $200 rifle. :2cents:

Try it at $250. It should sell, but you may have to ship.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....

If you don't need to get rid of it then don't get rid of it. The longer you sit on this the higher it's value will be. I bought M38's identical to this for $75 or so in 2007, and paid $45 for pretty much the same thing but defaced with an SA someone stamped on the side of it's receiver back in the 90's. Few if any of these are being imported anymore, they never were imported in the same huge numbers the 91/30 was, it will appreciate in value over time as it already has. Keep it.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

That looks to be an older Texas Guns import, not one of the Molots. I Wouldn't take less than $250, especially with the extras. TG and RGuns had the tiniest import marks of the Ukrainian M38's, and I think that's a plus.

Edit- I blew up the pic and it looks like Inter Ordnance. They too were tiny. In my opinion, any of those trump a non counter bored Molot.

By the way, I agree with JD. If you can't get $250, I'd keep it. Two years from now, if you go to replace it, it won't be for $200.

Thanks guys. I listed it @ $300 because being local I expected to haggle a little bit on the price. but sub $250 was my cut off for sale. Guess its going to sit in the cabinet for a little while longer.

I agree that it would be a good buy at 250.00 and with the accessories and the hard case you could get your 300.00 eventually if you included shipping. The rifle looks nice and the counter bore would not bother an experienced collector, but the m44 stock just might.
