All the serial numbers are stamped and match when it was refurbished. I have enjoyed researching all the proof marks and learning about the rifle. I'm getting the impression that I`ve caught the bug, every time I see another Mosin I start looking it over trying to figure it out. Though I might have a different bug because I picked up a Czech VZ24 in Sept so I'm also looking through the Mausers. I`ll probably wake up some time and hear some long forgot battle being played out in my vault between old bitter enemies.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: First Mosin after a long time thinking
Welcome to the board Andy, sounds like a nice one the first time what year and arsenal?WisCafe wrote:Hello, I am Andy,
Tuesday, I finally pulled the trigger, I know bad pun, and got a Mosin after thinking about since 09. I was originally thinking a cool cheap deer gun. So I went to Fleet Farm and for $139 they had about a half dozen to choose from. I checked the actions and the bores on each of them and and selected which I thought to be the best condition. After making my selection the clerk comments on the brass endcaps on the hand guards and how they do not get a lot of those ones in.
So originally I wanted to put on a scope and put it in a sporterized stock but now with the brass cool factor I may just leave this one alone and enjoy it as is.
Well maybe a scout scope as that is reversible.![]()

ok after cleaning the cosmoline off I have found it to be a 1936 Izhevsk. Overall it appears in great condition and now I look forward to taking it to the range. When I boar sited it the sights seem to be slightly off with impact being to the right of target but we are talking the width of a laser beam so only real world will let me know.
One question on the brass end caps should that be just on the top stock piece or is my bottom and top stock a mismatch to get it out the door?
Pics to come

I have a m44 with a bad barrel, is it very hard to find and install a barrel on it. I understand that getting off old barrel is hard. any advise would be appreciated,

Uncle Joe's boys sighted that 91/30 in at the arsenal with the bayonet mounted, without it windage is slightly effected, that could be what is causing the sights to look off. Try it with and without the bayonet. The Elby sight tool was created to deal with adjusting the front sight so it will shoot straight without the bayonet mounted.WisCafe wrote:ok after cleaning the cosmoline off I have found it to be a 1936 Izhevsk. Re: m44
Freddie, barrel swapping is a job for a professional gunsmith, it's not as simple as screw it off, screw it back on. special tools are involved as well as training. Any barrel you find that is not attached to a rifle is likely off because it has problems, and nobody is making new barrels. What it would all end up costing you is more than a nice M44 would cost. Hang the worn out rifle up on the wall and appreciate it for the historical relic it is, if you must shoot a M44 then get another M44 with a better barrel, they are not rare or that expensive.freddieman4 wrote:I have a m44 with a bad barrel, is it very hard to find and install a barrel on it. If you search a little harder and find a M91/59 you'll have a great shooter, better trigger and almost perfect barrel. All without the added weight of a bayonet. They only cost slightly more than M44's.
There are many different Mosins than the common M91/30 and M44.
