Asking the experts here, what did I see?

Post by IH424 »

Yesterday at a local gun shop I saw a Mosin in what looked to be an 1891 stock. It had a Tikka receiver dated 1941, and also had a Soviet marked sniper scope on it. Was this type rifle ever produced or did someone just throw some parts together?

I'm sorry I forgot to get some pics.

Need photos. But if a '91 stock, versus a 91/30, sounds like Bubba got hold of a Finn.

Tikka made M91's from 1925-1927 and 1940-1943 so the rifle could have been genuine. The scope, probably not. But I am far from an expert on all the variations of Mosin's out there. Like GS said, we need pictures to be sure exactly what it is.

If the scope was attached in the Soviet PU fasion then Bubba would be it, if it's a Soviet scope attached using one of the no alteration aftermarket scope mounts then it's fairly normal, but not Finn. Odd would be using a Soviet marked scope with one of the aftermarket mounts being that there are so many better choices of glass out there. That's like butting bias ply tires on a 2015 Cadillac. Bubba snipers are nothing new, they have been produced both commercially by outfits like Century and by individuals for many years now. The problems come up when someone like yourself sees one and thinking it's real and rare buys it. We then have to break the news to them that they have been had, rooked, bamboozled, taken to the cleaners, better to do as you have done and ask first before buying.

Yes. This is a good reminder of "Ask before you buy". As JYD explained, many who have bought before asking have been seriously disappointed.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....

The scope mount was the sniper type, with the stock cut. I didn't buy it due to my suspicion of its authenticity, and the $850 asking price.

Does the shop claim it is a Finnish sniper or something?

I don't know anything about M-91 snipers, if there was such a thing. To me, it wouldn't make much sense for the Finn's to convert an M-91 to a sniper when they likely had many captured examples in the 91/30 area. I've seen a few of these, even Russian varieties, for sale on GB from time to time. I, personally, would walk away from any M-91 "sniper" unless it came with significant documentation. But, that's just me... Some might consider is a novelty but I can think of a ton of rifles I would like more for $850. :2cents:

There was a such thing. But all m/91 snipers you'll ever see are guaranteed to be frauds. They were so rare. More than rare.

And when m/91 is seen with PU setup even the thickest guy should just run away.
