AK rear sight questions...

Post by cjsimoh »

I am new to AKs and a bit confused about the rear sight. In the photo below, is the slide adjuster set for 100? The front edge of the slider should be on the mark?

Also, do you zero an AK at the 100 mark or the "battle zero" P mark? Most of what I have been able to find on the subject says to zero at at 25 meters at the P mark and then fine tune it out at 100.
Others say to set the sight at 100, zero at 25 meters and then fine tune at 100. There are several other zeroing ideas and methods out there too, but these 2 are the most common that I found with Google.

Many thanks in advance!

Yes, it is set for 100 meters in the pic., all the back is the battle setting which is equal to 300 m.
I myself use the second method you mentioned, but whatever works will do.
Check out PokinHoles.com for free targets that are optimized for the trajectory of the 7.62x39 round.
 on the AK and happy shooting! BTW more pics would be sweet :)
Firearms without ammunition are like teats on a boar hog. Useless!

Thanks! It's nothing much to look at, just the Century Romanian WASR 10/63. I have the furniture off of it right now while I try to decide what finish to put on this bare wood to protect it and hopefully make it look a little nicer.
I'm not going to go with the often seen "Russian red" finish. I'm thinking about either amber shellac or, pine tar and boiled linseed oil/beeswax. I'm leaning toward the pine tar/BLO for a couple of reasons. 1 - I have it on hand and 2 - shellac scratches easy and I've read some accounts where the shellac wouldn't dry and stayed tacky.

I'll post some pics when it's done.

Hey cjsimoh - you just took the question (sighting in an AK) right out of my keyboard. I recently bought an I. O. akm 247 and have not had opportunity to sight it in. Got a new top cover with a see-through mount and mil spec optic. Being all black, it looks really good. I also put an adjustable stock on it, as it came a bit short-tailed. My last purchase was the mosin 91/30, 1942, also waiting to be sighted in. I didn't realize how strict this forum would be on mods, so I can't say a lot about it other than it came with a beautiful stock ( I assume spruce, from what I have read about the Russians) that will not be re-furnished. Bluing is also good and bore is shiny. I'm planning to sight the both of them in next week, barring snow and the thirty-mile wind we had today. BTW - I am a Buckeye, now in Delaware. Last home was in SE, near the river (hill country), but I was in Youngstown for seven years. Anyhow, Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

Hi RevMBR,

Good luck with both of them. I never made it out to the range with the AK to try to get it sighted, and probably won't until the Spring now. Post back and let me know how it goes! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours...
