1941 Savage No4 MkI
1941 Savage No4 MkI
Here's one you don't see all that often, a Savage No4 MkI rifle from their first year of production. Note the serial number. Even though it is fairly low in terms of overall produciton, it is rather high for a 1941 dated Savage. Sometime in 1942 they switched to production of the simplified No4 MkI* and the vast majority of Savage Enfield rifle production was of No4 MkI*'s. Also, most No4 MkI Savages are 1942 dated. This Savage No4 MkI has all of it's original Savage No4 MkI parts with the exception of the bolt head, rear sight (not sure if any No4 MkI's came fromt he factory with the simplified rear sights or not, but i think it is a replacement, though the finish does match on it, so it will stay in place), and the missing front sling swivel. Ironically,I have another Savage No4 MkI that's 1942 dated, but I have no No4 MkI* yet. I'll probably try to get a Long Branch No4 MkI* though for variety's sake, preferably Canadian marked.

Nice, the front sling loop is not for a sling. The front one is actually a stacking swivel for stacking rifles together. I have an unissued 1942 Savage. You might search the auction sites for one of these. An unissued Savage stamped spike bayonet and a a Savage marked action cover.

It's missing the sling swivel from the middle band, the font sling swivel. IIRC, the stacking hooks and swivels for No4 rifles are post-WWII and not British.

I have a 42, I think. It has the simplified flip rear sight. Mine is a No.4MkI*. Great find to get one without the *. Congrats!
