M39 1941 VKT
I bought this rifle last April from a local gun & pawn shop. He usually has a few milsurps coming and going and I just like to go browsing to see what he has sometimes. He had 2 of these M39s and I had to take one home. It is a 1941 M39 with "VKT" and "D" markings on the top of the barrell. Serial numbers on the barrel, receiver, bolt, and floorplate match, but there is no serial number on the buttplate. It is also marked "36VKT00" on the side of the barrell next to the "SA" stamp, and it has a CAI import stamp near the muzzle. There looks to be a filled hole in the top of the receiver but I can't be sure. There also appears to be a repair on the toe of the buttstock. I got the sling from Liberty Tree. I haven't disassembled or fired it yet though, but it feels so comfortable against my shoulder. I'll do some shooting once I set up my home range.

Nice, what you think is a repair is actually some pieces put in to stop a crack or other weak spot in the buttstock. Take of the buttplate and you will see what I mean.

Last April and you still haven't cleaned it? You work as slow as I do. Nice M39

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

The "hole" on the top receiver flat is just where the Finns milled off the Russian Imperial eagle.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....

Thanks, that clears that up. I wondered about it for a minute.martin08 wrote:The "hole" on the top receiver flat is just where the Finns milled off the Russian Imperial eagle.

Nice one
My M39's are my favorite Mosin's by far. If you're not careful you're going to end up with a serious case of Finnitis!

Nice rifle. Do you know what kind and year of the receiver?

Thanks, I was wondering about that too. The internet hadn't shed any light on it for me.Lee-online wrote:Nice clean rifle. I bet she shoot great.

I don't. I haven't disassembled it yet. I'll have to check the tang and get back to ya.vtxmosin wrote:Nice rifle. Do you know what kind and year of the receiver?

Here's a snap of the receiver tang and the bottom of the barrel shank. On the tang you can see a 9 and 7 with an arrow between, a faint 5 at the corner of the 7, a faint upside down 1 above that, a faint 9 on the other side of the hole to the left, and a 1 next to the sear with a circled R on the sear. What do these markings indicate? On the bottom of the barrel shank is a T inside a triangle. Is that a Tikka mark?

Ok I might have just answered my own question by looking at 7.62x54r.net. My guess is it's a Sestroryetsk 1897 receiver and Remington sear? Here's an additional snap of the side of the tang and an arrow on the trigger.

Antique 1897 Sestroryetsk receiver adds to the cool factor of this rifle.

Pretty cool! I love my M39's. It feels so perfect in my hands. Natural balance! I can't say enough about them! Congratulations on that find. Very good rifle.

I thought that made it pretty cool too. Definitely the oldest Mosin part in my collection.Lee-online wrote:Antique 1897 Sestroryetsk receiver adds to the cool factor of this rifle.
