1940 Tula, probably a Finn.

Post by Lee-online »

Saw this for sale on Armslist, :beek: after seeing a few more pics I decided I liked it even though I couldn't tell a lot by them.

Seeing it in person I liked it but it was in poor shape due to its storage. Bore look bad and had minor surface rust in places. When I pulled out the bolt to inspect the bore, the seller asked "how did you do that?" :o I walked away paying $180 and was happy with it. Well today I cleaned it up and it looks great, bore was only full of grease and dirt. I am well chuffed.

Anyhow, 1940 Tula, looks to be almost original. Finns didn't do much to this rifle. Besides the overall look, two Finn traits led me to assume its a Finn, the numbered bolt knob and the scrubbed mag.

No [SA] or D stamps.
Image

It does have this A stamp.
Image

1940 Tula tang date.
Image

Butt plate matches.
Image

Likely to be its original stock.
Image

Mag is scrubbed and is the only Izhevsk part on this rifle.
Image

Well worn metal above the wood line, rust below that I cleaned up. First time this was cleaned since its import judging by the crud I cleaned off.
Image

Ding and dents all over.
Image

Image

Last 3 on the bolt knob told me this was a Finn capture.
Image

The original bolt serial number.
Image

Extractor, is this a Finn replacement?
Image

Import mark.

So there it is, another cheap old Russian rifle. :)

I love these rifles Lee. My first non refurb was the cousin to yours, a 1938 Tula. I won it on Gunbroker and wanted it purely for the worn look. It turned out to be SA stamped, and the level of finish is just like yours. Every piece is marked with the Tula star. I noticed that even your cleaning rod has the Tula star. Congrats Lee, you got yourself a great find.

I too have always loved these rifles that show their history and hard lives they have endured.

I find it interesting that one Finn captured rifle will have almost nothing done to it and the next will be totally worked over.

I noticed the "purple" colored extractor, isn't that a Finn thing?

I was looking for any info on this A stamp, I didn't find any so I guess this is one of those unknown ones.

A better pic of it without the little bit of fuzz.

Here are some close ups. I have been trying to get better at getting the focus spot on, I still have a long way to go.

That "unknown A stamp" is looks to me like a partial [SA] mark. The rifle is obviously Finn'edd otherwise. Very nice piece!

The first pic I posted of this looks just like an A and nothing more. The second one on its side shows more of the box and the S.

Its weird how I didn't even think of it being the [SA].

Zoomed in pic shows it is a partial [SA]

Nice close up photography! It can be a bit difficult to read stamps when they're right on top of one another like that. But what can I say, I've seen quite a few [SA] stamps in my day, lol.

Very nice! Glad it went to a good home, I almost pulled the trigger on this one as I was also in contact with the seller, but since I'm working hard on the Lotta collection, I had to pass. Glad it's in good hands, beautiful rifle. :)
