Current pricing on SCW Mosin?

Post by Motorradfahrer »

Can anyone help me out with what a SCW Mosin is going for currently? A friend has one that he inherited but he's not at all interested in keeping. I'm new to mosin collecting having purchased a 91/30 from that same friend. I know for certain that the one in question is SCW based on the flaming bomb and the wire hangers. There is no cleaning rod with this one and it's very dirty at the moment because it had been stored in his dad's attic. The barrel is full of cobwebs and old spider egg sacs... doesn't appear that the stock has been refinished at all and I did notice some cracks in the handguard. That's all the info I have at the moment.

Should I consider purchasing? If so, what price range might I be looking at?

Thanks!

Cracked handguards on these are common for some reason. This sounds like a good one, the flaming bomb cartouche isn't all that common. The price has been creeping up lately. They used to be $100 rifles, but are usually around $200 and up when I see them now.

$250-$350, welcome to the board, these rifles are shooting up in collectability,

Thanks, guys. Would this also be something I might be able to shoot or just a collectible? If I get a little lucky on timing tomorrow then I might be able to get over to his place for some pics.

Heck yes shoot it. As long as the bore is decent, it headspaces and you have ammo.

I've seen them sell for as much as 250 and seen even higher asking prices go unsold. The most recent gb auction I watched sold for 187. I spent 80 on my first one. 150 might be a fair offer for both parties depending on condition. Wave some cash around and that price may be lower. As far as shooting them goes I personally don't because I have plenty of other shooter grade refurbs to take to the range. Having a collector piece is a good reason to get a couple more refurbs to shoot!

The MP8 stamp is very desirable. I'd pick it up if I were you. I have yet to come across one in the wild yet with the stamp that hasn't been bubba'ed already. I just paid $250 for a plain-jane 1937 Izhevsk SCW M91/30. So anything around that range would be a great deal.

Looking forward to seeing photos!!

You might want to clean out those spider eggs though. I like rifles with history, but if that history involves spiders? My wife wouldn't let it in the house. Like everyone else already said, buy it and post pics. I don't think I would go to $350 on an SCW 91/30, but $200-$300 range seems about right.

I'm not a huge fan of spiders either so first thing would definitely be to clean things up. I'll be able to get pics tonight so stay tuned...

I saw a wolf spider bigger than a silver dollar a few minutes ago, we have a lot of them.

What qualifies a rifle as a shooter or collector grade? I shoot my M39s, M27s and am waiting for a good day to take my newest 1935 28/30 to the club.

My lighting wasn't so great but hopefully you can get some ideas from these. I need to get better at my gun photography skills.

That is an interesting cut out in the stock at the rear of the cross bolt. I haven't seen that before, but their are a lot of interesting field repairs and such on many SCW rifles. If you don't mind, what did you end up buying it for?

Not a 91/30!!!!! Looks like a Dragoon or M91. How long is it overall?? Looks pretty fine to me.

It is a bit longer than the 91/30 but I haven't measured specifically. Maybe couple inches longer...just a guess. What should I look for to help me determine?

Based on the 1914 date and the markings on the receiver it's a Tula, Emperor Peter the Great Ordnance Factory M91, made between 1912-1918.

It is hard to determine the price until we determine the model, but I am pretty sure it is a m91. Need a full picture of the handguard. 200-300 likely, but I would want to get it for closer to the low estimate, and I can't see how shooting it would cause any harm. Not cleaning it after shooting is what causes harm.

Oh you asked about being a collectible. That answer might differ for some folks, as some would consider any Mosin a collectible, as for me, most are, especially if they have some little feature that makes them unique. Spanish Civil War rifles are a whole genre to Mosin collectors so they pay more, thereby raising the market value. The same with Finns, or certain kinds of Finns.
