NYS Model 1871 Remington carbine

If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

NYS Model 1871 Remington carbine

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

and it stays in the state were it belongs, too many of these things seem to have scattered to the far corners of the globe.

Nice find!

Probably used to keep strikers and anarchists in line. It certainly would have been here in PA!

   probably, so far as I know none of these went to Cuba in '98 with NYS's Volunteer regiments. All I have heard mention of is the 45/70 Springfield used by them. Ammo standardization probably, the NYS guard had to be well armed in case Canada invaded

That is really nice Jim. Looks like a shotgun when you look into the muzzle.

Cool. I've got the rifle version chambered in 50-70. It has the elongated "shield" hammer, and "NY 8" on the Buttstock. I read that 8th Regiment had a long and interesting history, U.S. Civil War (Bull Run/Manassas), aiding in in putting down the NY Flour Riots of 1826, the Dead Rabbit Riot (remember the movie "Gangs of New York?) and even participated in the Span Am War. Where my 1871 Rifle came into the picture, I don't know, but it is in similar great shape like JYD's carbine... looks like it missed any kind of action.. ;^)
