1848 Percussion Springfield Musket
1848 Percussion Springfield Musket
My grandfather obtained, from who knows whom and where, an 1848 percussion Springfield musket. It is from the last run for the 1848 model Springfields as it is fitted with a percussion nipple. I wouldn't even dare try to fire it, and I suspect the percussion nipple is clogged or damaged.
What I would like to know is if anyone has seen or knows where to obtain a bayonet for this model?

Ebay or gunbroker, it might take a lifetime of waiting for one to come up for sale and cheap it will not be. Be aware that all of the early US bayonets have been reproduced at one time or another, it's an easy repop because they are simple socket fit's. Know what you are buying, and deal only with reputable sellers.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: 1842 Percussion Springfield Musket in wall display
I found a guy who makes display cabinets and got one for my musket.
It sits above my desk in my home office. Makes me smile when I look up.

Hey I just saw this. It makes me smile looking at it too.
Re: Model 1842 Percussion Springfield Musket
To be correct, it is a Model 1842 springfield musket manufactured in 1848.
What I really like about it is that it's the same pattern musket that I wore in my collar. The last pattern smooth ore issued by the U.S. Army.
