Showcase submission Winter War Captured 31 Dragoon

Post by Miller Tyme »

Put a bid in on this one up last week on GB since I didn’t have a 1930’s Dragoons and was pleasantly surprised it held up. (I think everyone else had eyes for the 1914 Dragoon)

It’s a very well used Finn Winter War captured Dragoon that is “41” stamped. It still retains the Dragoon solid barrel bands and is a mix of both early and late Izhevsk & Tula parts. The bore is dark but there is good rifling and the sling slot escutcheon plates are missing, and have been for some time as the rear sling hanger wore a nice groove into the stock.

Can't help but admire the honest to goodness patina and character of that old girl! She's a beaut!

Very cool Dragoon.

What is the latest known Dragoon? The transitional 91/30 were being produced at this time so did they just continue to use up the Dragoon parts until they ran out?

Nice rifle, MT. But just to keep everyone on the same page, the 41 stamp is documented as a Continuation War capture stamp.

No worries, sir! Just wanted to point that out as there seems to be a lot of misinformation out there about that stamp. Just trying to keep the info on this board straight for the n00bs :bwink:

For what it's worth- if the armorers didn't know when the rifle was captured (Winter or Continuation), it was stamped with the Continuation mark. That actually must have been the default as I've never seen a 40 stamped rifle or machinegun of any kind.

That's a beautiful rifle. I have a 1931 ex dragoon and looking at your 1931 dragoon was a real pleasure.

Congratulations on that one! I was watching it closely, thinking about a bid but if all goes well I'll have a different "41" stamped rifle by the EOD. I had a feeling that you were going to wind up with this one!

It's curious on the missing sling escutcheons... Looks like they plain rotted off. It has seen a lot & has character; I like it. :vcool:

I was unclear on the '41 stamp myself...........so, IF my Finn Capture M91-30 does NOT have a '41 stamp then its a winter war capture? That makes "Christine" even more evil :devil2: :devil2: :devil2: :devil2:

Most captured rifles were never marked with 40 nor with 41. So it is impossible to say really when it was captured.

I have had dark bores that would regain the shine, by shooting some corrosive ammo in them, using ammonia cleaner and a brass brush. Scrub well for a minute or two, as you run patches thru little black balls of crud would start to turn loose, repeat, the shine returned on most........SBP

Very nice

I saw that one but had a 30 already. Too bad about the escutcheons but still very nice. I love the look.

For the guy who asked about how late they made the Dragoons, I had a transitional '33 Tula /25\.
