saw odd escutcheons on a 39 Tula today
The front escutcheons were the wartime half escutcheons which are not uncommon at all. However the rear escutcheons were the pre-war type except that instead of screws they were held in will little tacks or nails. Logically it makes sense as a war time transition to go from screws to nails, I've just never seen it before now.

Is it a spliced stock?

Transitional stock, 1941 or 42 during the changeover, old parts were used until that ran out.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I sure would love to see pictures of that one before I say anything about what it might be. Bill

If it's still there I'll post some pictures. I didn't notice a stock splice and just assumed that screws were one of the things that were eliminated as they streamlined production.

Never seen one with little nails in the escutcheons either, but I do have a 46 Izhevsk m44 with a big arse nail in the butt plate.walnut red wrote:Logically it makes sense as a war time transition to go from screws to nails, I've just never seen it before now.

Is it a refurb? I have seen a couple that appear to have had the escutcheons sanded right along with the stock during refurb. The slots on some of the screws were almost completely sanded away. I assumed the screws wouldn't come out or Igor was lazy that day. But I could see how, if done uniformly, the screws could appear to be tacks.
