I would still advice LB only, also with reloads. It is your rifle and you can do what ever you wish with it. But the rifle of yours is on the rare side. Finn capture with original stock finish...not too many around anymore.

Yeah, I'm not going to shoot it through the SVT. I don't even want to take the chance with it. I was surprised this went so "cheap" compared to others on GB. $960. The others I've been following have been going around $1,200. Did I get a good deal or did the others just overpay because of a limited market?

You got a real deal. I would say it was actually cheap as the original stock finish is a really big plus in my book!

I didn't win the sling, so I ordered a post-war SVT sling from Numrich. I also ordered a Finnish "expidient" style sling. I got both to see which one I like more. I'm still looking for an SVT gas tool.

Numrich slings are probably PPSh slings and not SVT/AVT slings.

Finnish narrow canvas sling is just right for your Finn capture and lookd good.

How in the heck do you order from him?

He doesn't have a business ordering system on his site.

Its called slam fire. I had an SKS that did that. When the bolt returns to battery after the first shot the firing spring slams forward. The cure is a spring with the firing pin. The SKS has a kit for it. Don't know about the SVT-40.

Use his phone number. This method of communication has been used since the mid 1800's. JYD has some of the early ones, he still uses one.

SVT-40 already has a spring loaded firing pin already. But very soft primers could still give trouble...

I will be able to pick up the SVT this upcoming Tuesday. My slings should be here Friday, and now all I need is a gas tool and some more ammo!

My SVT40 woks nicely as it is. I got a second, after-market magazine. Had to file the lugs on the back so it would latch and unlatch properly. Now I need a rat tail file to work the feed ramp down.

I have heard different things on these...were the soldiers trained to swap mags when empty or to load with a stripped clip? I'm sure they were trained to do both, but what was the gun primarily designed/intended to do?

The rifle was issued with three magazines numbered 1, 2, 3. The soldiers were issued also stripper clip pouches.

First they emptied the magazines and then used the stripper clips to reload the rifle.

First they emptied the magazines and then used the stripper clips to reload the rifle.
Then they surrendered.

First to the Finns, then to the Germans.

A bit later they refined the procedure to not surrendering.

So either way is proper. I was just curious because like on the Enfields they have detachable magazines, but they aren't really ever meant to be removed except for cleaning.

I think that Enfield has a quite different design philosophy.

The Walther Gewehr 41 was designed with the permanent magazine, but the redesign that led to the Gewehr 43 incorporated the lessons about having a detachable magazine. While the Soviets were parsimonious with ammunition and equipment, they did realize the effectiveness of quick firing rifles and quick reloads. The SVT-40 was intended to completely replace the Mosin Nagant 91/30 as the main battle rifle. They couldn't do it because of their unannounced visitors in June 1941.
