Sweet new Russian .22

Post by Mike »

While visiting father-in-law in Arkansas this weekend I dropped into the local LGS to see if they happened to have a bolt action .22 which I have been searching for for a while. They had a Mossberg 802 Plinkster on the rack but its plastic stock looked funky and its bolt action was rough.

So the guy behind the counter pulled out his book and went through it. He found a Winchester Wildcat listed and disappeared into the vault for quite some time. He came back with this:

A new in box rifle, this gun was discontinued in 2009 so this was a sweet find!

Russian you ask? Yep, this is a Tula TOZ-78 rebranded as a Winchester. Reviews are all good, the rifle feels well built and the bolt is smooth. It came with one 5 round magazine and three 10 round so I don't even have to buy any extras.

I'll take it out next week and try it with the iron sights before I decide whether to scope it or not, right now I'm thinking I won't.

That should be a hell of a shooter. Good find.

That action looks a lot like the action on my German .22 Hornet.

No it is actually a Weihrauch branded Krico 301, made in Germany. That schnaubel foreend is just a European thing.

That's funny because the stock on the Winchester was made specifically for the US versions, the Russian version doesn't have that same shape.

I need to do a range report on this. I took it out and had some fun. The bolt is a little tight for a .22 so I just treat it like a Mosin. :chuckles: My biggest problem was seeing the teeny, tiny sights, I think I may need new glasses!

Once that is taken care of though I think this will be a great little plinker and squirrel gun.

Next time I take it out I'll get some photos.
